Strava is widely regarded as the primary social network for athletes, valued for its community features, segment leaderboards, and motivational tracking. While it excels at connecting users to local clubs and providing a platform to share activities, it faces significant criticism for its aggressive subscription marketing and occasional data discrepancies compared to dedicated GPS hardware.
Pros
- Strong social features for finding local running groups and clubs
- Motivational tools like segments and 'relative effort' to track personal improvements
- Ability to track gear usage, such as shoe mileage, even on free tiers
- Easy data export via GPX files and broad integration with various fitness devices
- Effective at motivating beginners and children by visualizing their progress
Cons
- Frequent and aggressive prompts to upgrade to the paid version
- Intrusive social suggestions to follow 'fan favorite' accounts
- Occasional discrepancies in distance and elevation data compared to dedicated GPS watches
- Heatmaps may lack detail in specific regions or for niche activities like skiing
Caveats
- There is user confusion regarding which features, such as shoe tracking, are currently paywalled versus free
- Many users treat it as a social 'sync' layer for data recorded on Garmin or Wahoo rather than a primary recording tool
- Weather and wind data estimates can sometimes feel inaccurate compared to real-world conditions
Best for
- Athletes looking for a social community and local clubs
- Competitive users who enjoy chasing segment leaderboards
- Casual runners and cyclists needing visual motivation to stay active
Avoid if
- You are highly sensitive to frequent subscription upselling and pop-ups
- You prefer a private, data-only experience without social interactions or 'fan' suggestions

the amount of climbing in that trail race was--according to my watch/Strava/etc.--approximately the amount of climbing I do in a whole year where I now live lmfao.
Strava also has a similar thing with live segments, can live race your own and someone else's time on a segment.
Did he at least get a best effort in Strava?
Does it make it more or less delulu if having both Garmin and Strava predictions pointing towards a PR being possible is swaying me towards actually trying?
It's not really fun tho, it just tracks your runs. And i only have one friend there, which i guess makes it less fun as well
Fair warning though, a lot of the other apps have quietly moved this behind a paywall (adidas Running, and some of Strava's audio cues), so if you go with one of those, double check it still works free before you count on it.
Strava has the best heatmap data from people's runs, so even though the routing algorithm has flaws and they are slow to update map data, it's the best for generating nice routes in places you don't know. The subscription is not cheap but if you travel and run in places you don't know, it's worth it.
Both Garmin and Strava are using the same maximum heart rate (190 bpm), but they calculate completely different heart rate zones. ... For example, a heart rate of 150 bpm is Zone 2 in Strava but almost the top of Zone 3 in Garmin. Which one should I trust for training?
Strava route builder. Garmin has a route builder too but I actually like Strava’s more
I had already downloaded the offline map of the trail and also saved the Strava route, both of which proved extremely useful throughout the trek.
