Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

YouTube is characterized as a massive, indispensable library of free educational and niche content that is increasingly hampered by aggressive AI-driven moderation and technical degradation. While it remains a primary resource for learning skills like programming or music, users report significant frustration with declining bitrates, the removal of older high-quality video profiles, and a search algorithm that prioritizes mainstream media over independent creators. For parents, the platform is frequently described as highly addictive and problematic for children due to its dopamine-heavy design.

Pros

  • Unparalleled free library for learning complex skills like programming, languages, and musical instruments
  • Excellent discovery platform for podcasters and independent creators to reach new audiences
  • Hosts rare and non-mainstream music, including small independent labels not found on other streaming services
  • Effective for hosting private or unlisted content for personal archival purposes
  • 4K upload options can provide better bandwidth and visual quality even for converted HD content

Cons

  • Aggressive AI moderation that terminates channels for 'dangerous behavior' or 'spam' without human review
  • Declining video quality and bitrates, including the 'nuking' of quality profiles on older uploads
  • Search results are often cluttered with irrelevant mainstream TV network clips and local news
  • Lack of support for high-end audio standards like Dolby Atmos
  • Content ID systems frequently strip audio from videos due to copyright claims
  • Web version can be slow and resource-heavy on older hardware

Caveats

  • The platform lacks clear markers to differentiate between expert advice and low-quality or incorrect information
  • Frequent UI overhauls are often met with significant user backlash
  • Occasional major service outages can halt access to the platform entirely

Best for

  • Self-directed learners seeking free tutorials
  • Fans of niche or rare music and independent media
  • Content creators looking for maximum reach and discovery

Avoid if

  • You are concerned about addictive 'dopamine loop' content for children
  • You require high-fidelity audio formats like Dolby Atmos
  • You need a platform with stable, human-mediated copyright and moderation policies

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~402 days), and since YouTube is a fast-changing service, users should be aware that recent policy or interface changes may not be fully captured.

What redditors said (10 of 104)

It seems YT is suddenly changing the rules (or at least the interpretations of them) and lots of motorsports/driving channels get taken down for "dangerous behavior" (probably drifting) but it's infuriating that AI can't differentiate between randoms and pros

There's nothing wrong with YouTube. Lots to be learned there. But also a ton of bullshit and very little to differentiate between the two for someone who doesn't already possess the context to tell the difference.

There's a problem with some apps, like YouTube, that have the wrong color space in 4k.

the default Youtube app kinda sucks at this, you can't delete multiple videos from a playlist or your watch later list at once.

Next, I assumed it was a YouTube issue. Wasn't that either.

Plus the ads on standard youtube are totally inappropriate for kids, so if we forget to switch accounts ... they'll show our kid gambling ads...
