SETI
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
SETI is a well-received heavy tactical euro board game praised for its strong thematic integration of space exploration and its impressive table presence. While it features significant rules overhead and a long playtime, players generally find the core mechanics intuitive once the game is in motion, often describing it as a rewarding puzzle with high replayability.
Pros
- Strong thematic integration where the science and space exploration feel relevant to gameplay.
- Beautiful table presence and high-quality components.
- Excellent reference sheets that clearly explain actions, technology, and scoring.
- High replayability driven by a large deck of cards and variable alien species that change game flavor.
- Satisfying tactical gameplay that rewards adapting to a shifting board state.
Cons
- Significant initial rules overhead that can take 30 minutes or more to teach.
- Playtime can be quite long, especially with higher player counts.
- Can make a poor first impression due to its 'tightness' and potential for frustration before mechanics click.
- Lack of accountability or tension for some players, leading to a 'deflated' feeling in certain sessions.
Caveats
- The game is more tactical than strategic; the rotating solar system and player actions make long-term planning difficult.
- While the core actions are simple, the sheer number of mechanics can be overwhelming for some.
- Player count matters: 3 players is frequently cited as the 'sweet spot,' while 4 players can feel more chaotic.
Best for
- Fans of heavy euro games who enjoy science themes.
- Players who appreciate high-quality components and 'table presence.'
- Groups looking for a game with high replayability and tactical depth.
Avoid if
- You prefer casual or social games with low rules overhead.
- You dislike games that require constant adaptation to a shifting board.
- You are sensitive to long playtimes.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 122-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~572 days), though this is generally acceptable for a stable media title like a board game.

I'm a sucker for boardgame components and damn, does that table presence look ever so beautiful.
SETI - Game that was instant hit with my group. We just can't get enough of it and I don't see it being shelved anytime soon. Specially as we recently got the expansion which adds ton of options and replayability.
I really enjoy the core game play of this and the science theme. Also it looks amazing on the table. The best part though is how you plug in the different Aliens and how thy flavor the game.
The game I as good as ever. ... A really fun game.
Plus SETI has one of the best reference sheets I've ever seen. It has every action, procedure, technology tile, end game scoring tile and a symbol reference sheet.
She got into SETI without issues.
seti is one of those games where none of the mechanics are particularly complicated or hard to understand there’s just a lot of them.
SETI is definitely the easiest teach (and my second fav). The core actions are largely simple and you don't have to teach the tricky part (the aliens) till they show up.
Good deal of euros have rectangular shapes (Lacerda stuff, stuff like Voidfall, SETI, Arnak, Scythe and Expeditions from Stonemeier)
When everyone understands the game and it is in full flow, it's a thing of beauty as satellites ping around the sky.
