On trick taking games (Fox in the Forest, Scout) or pattern games (Azul), I regularly beat him.

maybe you don't like that kind of games, but I like playing: bohnanza, scout, startups, skull, here to slay, spicy, and the like card games

Parent context: Scout is a great example of not evert game needs a theme. But st least the circus theme is somewhat unique, as meaningless as it is. I'll take it over yet another fantasy/scifi/cthulu themed game.

Secret hitler, tsuro, deep sea adventure, scout, magic maze, and cubitos would be my recs!
