Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Salicylic acid (SA) cleansers are widely regarded as a staple for managing acne, blackheads, and clogged pores. Reddit users frequently recommend them as an effective wash-off treatment that is often more tolerable than leave-on acids, though opinions are mixed regarding the ideal frequency of use. While many find it a "savior" for daily use, others report significant dryness and irritation, particularly when the cleanser is combined with other active exfoliants.

Pros

  • Effective at unclogging pores and reducing the appearance of blackheads.
  • Helps manage oily T-zones and prevents new blemishes from forming.
  • Generally considered a reliable, long-term treatment for acne-prone skin.
  • Available in affordable formulations from brands like CeraVe and The Ordinary.

Cons

  • Can cause skin flaking, redness, and extreme dryness if used too frequently.
  • May be ineffective for some because the active ingredient is rinsed off quickly.
  • High risk of skin barrier irritation when stacked with other acids (AHA/PHA) or retinoids.

Caveats

  • Individual tolerance varies greatly; some users require daily use while others find twice a week is the limit.
  • Initial breakouts may be a 'purge' or simple irritation, making the first 3 weeks of use difficult to judge.
  • Consistency is necessary to maintain results for congested skin.

Best for

  • Oily skin types
  • Individuals with persistent blackheads or clogged pores
  • Those looking for a gentler alternative to leave-on BHA treatments

Avoid if

  • You have naturally very dry or highly sensitive skin
  • Your current routine already includes multiple chemical exfoliants or high-strength actives

For me, daily salicylic acid use is my savior. For you, maybe not. But blanket statements about it like “it’s not a good idea for the skin” are not really accurate. For many people it’s a great ingredient so fear mongering about it is bothersome to me because you might chase someone away from something that can actually help them. With most skin products and treatments, people will have to try and see if it is comparable and helpful for them, but salicylic acid has a long and strong track record as an acne treatment.

Anyways rn my routine is basically just cleanse with a SA cleanser every other day and moisturize with the byoma gel cream every few days (basically when i remember). I have acne but my skin is also like dry so idk if it’s the SA that’s making it like that?

For cleansing, there’s nothing better than salicylic acid face wash. 1-2x a week swap face wash with medicated shampoo as has already been suggested.

3 weeks is still early enough that this could just be irritation rather than a true “purge,” especially since you’re using salicylic acid cleanser twice a day AND PHA twice a day. that’s a lot of exfoliation for most skin barriers.

Your current routine has multiple exfoliating/active products stacked together (salicylic acid cleanser + AHA/BHA treatment), which can easily irritate your skin and damage your barrier.
