Pros

  • We're trying to insulate the attic of our 1880s Chicago home. We're installing baffles before rockwool.
  • You could remove the wood and fill the joists with rockwool.
  • I'd just go rockwool everywhere. Spray foaming wooden ceilings/roofs that weren't designed for it and are very old can cause issues.
  • Do you have Rockwool there? I’ve made traps with Rockwool…
  • Alternatively R15 with rockwool in bays, apply 1 (or 2) inch sheets of polyiso to the exterior, and hang siding on top.

Cons

  • Other than that, maybe some inorganics like rockwool could act like substitute.?
  • Parent context: Compressing extra material into the space doesn't make the space larger. If you have a 3" void you're filling with Rockwool, it will still be 3" whether you squeeze one piece of material in there or two. Compressing the R...
  • I’ve used Rapid Rooters and Rockwool before, but I’m curious- what’s your go-to plug/media these days for solid, reliable germination?

Parent context: Compressing extra material into the space doesn't make the space larger. If you have a 3" void you're filling with Rockwool, it will still be 3" whether you squeeze one piece of material in there or two. Compressing the Rockwool might work against you because it could reduce the air pockets and space between the layers of material, resulting in less absorption. Reply: By compressing two layers of wool in to thin frame you lose performance per $.

I will build some insulation panels using either Rockwool or Knauf insulation.

In addition to that room being wholly cut off from the rest of the house's noise, it retained temperature like a fiend. ... I am a BIG proponent of insulating interior walls and rockwool.
