HiFiMAN Edition XS
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The HiFiMAN Edition XS is widely regarded as a high-performance planar magnetic headphone that offers exceptional sound quality, clarity, and imaging for its price. However, it is equally known for a polarizing physical design, characterized by a very large, loose fit and build materials that many users find underwhelming compared to the audio performance.
Pros
- Exceptional soundstage, imaging, and detail retrieval for the price point.
- Strong sub-bass performance and textured low-end response.
- Highly comfortable for users with larger heads due to low clamping force.
- Excellent value-to-performance ratio, particularly when purchased refurbished.
Cons
- Build quality feels 'cheap' or 'plasticky' to some, with reports of creaking and clicking.
- Loose fit and low clamping force can make the headphones feel unstable on the head.
- Stock cable is frequently criticized for its 'cold spaghetti' texture and poor quality.
- Potential reliability concerns, with some users reporting driver failures shortly after the warranty period.
Caveats
- The fit is highly subjective; users with smaller heads often find them too large and may require aftermarket 'comfort straps' to fix the headband.
- While they sound great, some users suggest they benefit significantly from a dedicated DAC or amp.
- There is a noted 'QC lottery' regarding driver longevity and build consistency.
Best for
- Audiophiles prioritizing sound quality and detail over premium build materials.
- Listeners with larger-than-average head sizes.
- Fans of dreampop, electronic, and orchestral music who value immersive imaging.
Avoid if
- You have a small head or prefer a secure, high-clamp fit.
- You want a headphone that feels premium and rugged in the hand.
- You are sensitive to headband 'hot spots' or TMJ pain from large earcups.

Honestly the best entry into hifi audio is the Edition XS. It's one of the best open back headphones in the world for it's price.
They also sounded the exact same to me. The organics felt like an obvious 35-60% increase in sound quality.
The Edition XS is simply one of the best headphones for the money.
The Edition XS is one of Hifiman’s least durable headphones which is saying something for that company. ... The edition xs is as popular as it is for good reason. It was my first real upgrade after I got the budget entry Philips 9500. As long as you have a good external deck amp to power them I really think the XS is one of the best all around headphones in the world for the price. They truly punch above their weight. ... One very very important thing to note, The edition xs is almost the most comfortable headphone in the world. The problem is they did not give a headband with it.
Edition xs is a crazy amazing headphone. Still love mine.
I love my edition xs.
Parent context: The Edition XS use a bunch of cheap, nasty plastic, the headband combined with the huge earcups is really uncomfortable IMO (and I'm usually not picky about this sort of thing), and they're only going to fit people with large heads properly. I also found them really fatiguing to listen to. Reply: Can confirm. I have a small head and putting the Edition XS on my head felt like I was wearing Jecklin Floats.
Subbass, without muddiness, and you don't mind EQ? Planars are for you. In that price range you might be able to get an Edition XS?
I connect my Hifiman XS to cheap xiaomi phone jack plug add +10db bass bust and they slap like matherfucker to phonk tiktoks.
i used to have the edition xs, changed becuase had issues. Its just the cheaper hifiman headphones that are crap build quality
