Resident Evil 4 Remake
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Resident Evil 4 Remake is widely regarded as a high-quality modernization that successfully balances a more grounded, serious tone with the over-the-top camp of the original. While it is praised for its satisfying combat loop, technical optimization, and improved character writing, some players find the movement controls heavy and certain boss encounters frustrating due to the camera system.
Pros
- Incredibly satisfying and varied combat loop with fresh encounters.
- Significant improvements to character depth, particularly for Ashley and Luis.
- Excellent technical performance and optimization via the RE Engine.
- Strong implementation of PS5-specific features like haptic feedback and controller speakers.
- Modernized controls that feel balanced for the updated gameplay.
Cons
- Movement can feel 'stiff' or heavy, leading to frustration for some players.
- Puzzles are occasionally viewed as momentum-killers rather than engaging challenges.
- Camera and combat mechanics can make specific boss fights feel more frustrating than intense.
- Voice acting is described by some as middling compared to other entries.
Caveats
- Some long-time fans feel the remake loses a bit of the 'magic' and specific charm found in the original 2005 version.
- The plot remains intentionally silly, which may not appeal to those seeking a purely serious horror experience.
Best for
- Fans of survival-action games.
- Players who enjoyed Resident Evil Village or the FF7 Remake.
- Those looking for a polished, high-framerate action experience on PC or PS5.
Avoid if
- You dislike 'heavy' character movement or 'high gravity' control schemes.
- You are easily frustrated by escort mechanics or frequent character kidnappings.
- You prefer the specific campy atmosphere of the original game over a more grounded presentation.

sands off the campy edges into being more serious, but I can't deny the combat is slick as hell to replay. Some improvements over the original like removing the QTEs, but less charming and adding stuff like knife durability soured me.

it’s just as good as the original was, with a more modern and serious presentation. A fantastic good time.
Finally got around to playing the RE4 Remake. I loved the original, and toe remake has been an amazing way to revisit it. Updated controls are really nice. And the game feels balanced around it, too. Playing on PS5 with the haptic feedback, the guns feel AMAZING to use, and I like the other small touches like being able to navigate the map with the touch pad. The controller speaker is used really well too.
Unfortunately, this removes a significant amount of the original's creepy-but-silly charm, and it's also not a particularly deep horror story either, so the overall lack of gusto leaves a very significant void that's never truly filled. ... To be fair, the remake does try to flesh out Ashley's and Luis's characters more. ... Sadly, Ada and the villains are significantly worse in the remake.
The remake, though, strips away too much of this. I don't mind it wanting to be darker or more character-focused in concept, but it also doesn't commit to that enough to make up for the lack of charm. Frankly, you can do a lot better with character-focused horror, so I just don't see its story or world having the lasting draw that the original has had for me over the years.

I dare say I might by the remake after this for my PS5, see how they really compare. Although after playing the demo I kind of miss the precise shooting controls of the original. It seemed to lend itself to more survival horror as you can appreciate how everything is coming at you since you are on similar slower wavelengths than you would expect in a modern game. But my God would I kill for a dodge button or a parry like the remake has.
not counting RE4r because that is basically just an amazing action game
