Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely regarded as a masterpiece of open-world gaming, frequently cited for its unparalleled immersion, emotional storytelling, and graphical fidelity that remains competitive years after release. However, it is a polarizing 'slow burn' that requires a significant time investment, which some users find exhausting. While the world-building is highly praised, the game faces criticism for its restrictive mission design and the lack of modern technical updates for current-gen consoles.

Pros

  • Exceptional narrative depth and emotional storytelling.
  • Highly immersive and detailed open world that still sets a benchmark for the genre.
  • Stunning visual presentation, particularly on high-end PCs.
  • Excellent value when purchased during frequent deep sales (often cited around $15).
  • Dense with content, including numerous Easter eggs and side activities.

Cons

  • Locked at 30fps on consoles with no official 60fps performance patch for PS5/Series X.
  • Linear and restrictive mission structures that contrast sharply with the open-world freedom.
  • Clunky or unintuitive control schemes and keybinding layouts.
  • Online mode is considered abandoned by the developer with no new DLC or significant updates.
  • Technical issues on PC, including mediocre HDR implementation and occasional stability bugs.

Caveats

  • The game is a massive time commitment; some players report feeling 'burnt out' before finishing.
  • Story progression can be frustrating, occasionally forcing players to work for characters they know will betray them.
  • Base pricing has been criticized as 'absurd' for an older title, making it a 'sale-only' recommendation for many.

Best for

  • Players seeking a deep, cinematic, and slow-paced narrative experience.
  • Fans of high-fidelity open-world exploration.
  • Patient gamers who enjoy 'slow burn' stories like The Witcher 3 or Baldur's Gate.

Avoid if

  • You are sensitive to 30fps caps on modern console hardware.
  • You prefer fast-paced gameplay with non-linear mission objectives.
  • You are looking for a robust and actively supported multiplayer experience.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 122-month half-life. The evidence is drawn from a consistent volume of mentions across gaming-focused subreddits, reflecting both long-term acclaim and contemporary technical complaints.

But it does something that RDR2 also did that I find aggravating even though I understand why they do it. Both games frequently force you to work for people you know are going to stab you in the back.

RDR2, with whom it shares A LOT with from an immersion philosophy perspective, is an abject failure because Rockstar confused slow animations with actual mechanical immersion.

RDR2 - negligible difference across the board.

With dlss 4 it's an absolute godsend especially in older titles like rdr 2 where the graphical shimmering can be clean up with latest dlss preset.

Parent context: I get what you are saying about Disco Elysium it was the same with Red Dead 2. I started once a couple of years ago and stopped after a few hours and just put it off for a long time. I think sometimes the expansiveness or long duration can be a great repellent. At least to me. Reply: & spot on about RDR2; it's the same as starting a 1,000 pg+ book or a 3+ hr movie: you postpone until you don't, & it ends up being way more than worth the effort.

I played 2 last year, and while it is a beautiful game, the missions are a slog, most being just fetch quests, and the characters are poorly developed. I don't regret playing, but as I got closer to the end, I just wanted it to be over.

I’m playing rdr2 for the first time now and I think the game is 116GB.

However, I would love to start playing more high-end games such as Farcry 5, RDR2, Witcher, etc., which my Mac could not handle whatsoever.

Their weirdest one is that rdr2 specifically isn’t running in landscape mode, only portrait? (RDR2 is my test game).
