Pros

  • REI Ruckpack 40
  • I also like that the Ruckpack is just one unit for everything instead of having to worry about width while walking in narrow places.
  • I have (and love) this bag, and I’ve never thought or cared about pockets on the hip belt tbh.
  • Check out the Rei ruckpack 40. I just got and used mine on a trip. Nice hip belt. Clamshell opening but can also function as a top loader. Side access laptop compartment. Water bottle. I am 6’1”. While not nearly as comfortable as my osp...
  • I have this bag and really like it. Did 6 weeks in Peru as well as a ton of domestic travel. It's really durable, has a nice mix of features and is cheap compared to other bags. Your cons are legit though - one of the internal organizers...

Cons

  • REI Ruckpack 40 is almost the same but a little more travel than hike, depending on your priorities
  • I liked the REI Ruckpack 40 but delivery to Europe is very expensive.
  • The Ruckpack is oversized for the typical 22”x14”x9” overhead carry on limit.
  • My wife has tried an REI ruckpack 40 but it’s a little big and the strap system is a little fiddly since it’s meant to zip up inside the bag.
  • Here are the bags I'm considering: - REI Ruckpack 30 or 40

Check out the Rei ruckpack 40. I just got and used mine on a trip. Nice hip belt. Clamshell opening but can also function as a top loader. Side access laptop compartment. Water bottle. I am 6’1”. While not nearly as comfortable as my osprey hiking packs it does (nearly) fit carryon requirements. I walked the airport with it on and it felt very good.

Check out the REI Ruckpack 40, older Mystery Ranch Coulee 40 (newer has a longer frame), Kelty Redwing Traveler, Backcountry.com's travel pack....
