Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The DJI Osmo Action 4 is highly regarded as a top-tier value choice in the action camera market, particularly praised for its stabilization, magnetic mounting system, and rugged build quality. While it is now an older model compared to the Action 5 Pro, Reddit users frequently recommend it as the best budget-friendly alternative that still delivers professional-grade image quality and reliable performance for activities like cycling and travel.

Pros

  • Excellent value for money, especially when found on sale or purchased used
  • Strong 'Rocksteady' stabilization that performs well on bike trails and chest mounts
  • Convenient magnetic mounting system for quick swapping between fixtures
  • Durable and waterproof up to 20m without requiring an external case
  • Impressive battery life, particularly when using the Adventure Combo charging case

Cons

  • Mandatory app registration and phone number activation required to use the device
  • Susceptible to overheating in extreme conditions, such as high-resolution recording in direct high heat
  • Out-of-camera colors can occasionally appear overly saturated
  • Low-light performance is considered mediocre by some users

Caveats

  • The release of the Action 5 Pro has shifted the Action 4 into a 'budget' category, though many users feel the upgrades to the newer model are incremental
  • Overheating reports are mixed; while some users have no issues, others find it more prone to thermal shutdown than competitors in specific environments

Best for

  • Budget-conscious buyers wanting high-end stabilization
  • Cyclists and mountain bikers
  • Pet owners capturing high-energy movement
  • One-bag travelers needing a compact, rugged tech kit

Avoid if

  • You are uncomfortable with mandatory cloud-based activation and long TOS agreements
  • You primarily film long sessions in extremely hot climates (100°F+)
  • You require the absolute latest sensor technology found in the Action 5 Pro

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is highly current, with a median source age of approximately 29 days, though some specific complaints regarding software activation date back further.

To take advantage of the sensor size, the other two haven’t done great deal of software refinement in terms of video quality compared with GoPro 13 (I have GoPro 13 Hero, DJI OSMO Action 5 Pro and Insta360 GO 3S).

You need to go for DJI OSMO Action 5 Pro or Ace Pro 2 both seem to have bigger sensors(1.3 inches I believe) for multipurpose use and good low light performance

It should be fine, I use my Action 4 for some stationary filming as I really like the 4k output.

The adventure combo comes with 3 spare batteries in the charging case. I've never actually needed to use more than 1 spare on any one ride so far. Recorded for 4hrs almost continuously and still had about 30% charge left on the 2nd battery. Since then I just record a few minutes or when I have something to say, then shut it off, till I want to record again. So now a single battery easily lasts me a 100k ride with charge often left over. With 3 spare batteries I dare say I could probably record 8-10hrs continuously.
