Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Pocket Casts is widely considered a top-tier podcast player, frequently recommended for its superior queue management and clean user interface compared to native platform apps. While sentiment is broadly positive, there is a notable contingent of long-term users dissatisfied with the app's transition from a one-time purchase to a subscription model, which some feel has locked previously accessible features behind a paywall.

Pros

  • Highly effective queue and sorting features that help manage large listening feeds
  • Reliable buffering that allows for continued playback during brief internet outages
  • Clean and intuitive user interface with good discovery tools
  • Supports private and members-only RSS feeds that some other apps struggle with
  • Generally viewed as a significant upgrade over Apple Podcasts in terms of functionality

Cons

  • Transition to a subscription model left some early paid adopters feeling uncompensated
  • Certain features are perceived as being locked behind a high paywall
  • Occasional reports of bugs and slow loading times following major updates

Caveats

  • Users who purchased the app years ago may find the current monetization structure frustrating
  • While a free version exists, the full feature set requires a premium subscription

Best for

  • Power listeners who need advanced queue and organization tools
  • Users switching from Apple Podcasts looking for better playback stability
  • Listeners who frequently use private or member-exclusive podcast feeds

Avoid if

  • You are looking for a completely free app with no feature paywalls
  • You have a strong preference against subscription-based software models

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of approximately 390 days, which may not reflect the most recent app updates or pricing changes.

I moved to Apple Podcasts over Pocket casts because they locked basic features behind a very high paywall, even though I bought the app.

I WAS a pocket casts user since the early days when it was a paid app. Then they moved to make it free with optional subscription and left people who bought the app with no compensation whatsoever

so I gave up and gave Pocketcasts another chance. It seems like it'll be fine, I just have to get creative about the downloading for archiving bit.

Pocket casts queue feature single handedly keeping my podcast listening feed sane. It’s crazy how useful that one feature is.

I switched to Pocket casts from apple podcasts and omg it’s so much better. I’m not sure about all your points but the queue, sort order, played/unplayed functions are wayyy better. Also it actually buffers so if you don’t have interne for a brief time, it continues to play
