Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Audible is a dominant audiobook service frequently praised for its high-quality narration and seamless integration with the Kindle ecosystem, though it faces significant criticism regarding its pricing and business ethics. While users appreciate features like Whispersync and sleep timers, there is a strong undercurrent of dissatisfaction concerning expiring credits, the rise of AI-generated narration, and the platform's impact on author royalties.

Pros

  • Seamless integration with Kindle apps, allowing for synchronized text highlighting and page-turning during narration.
  • Extensive library selection, including high-quality narration for major authors and a growing podcast catalog.
  • Useful functional features such as a sleep timer for bedtime listening.
  • Occasional high-value promotional offers and integration with certain credit card entertainment benefits.

Cons

  • The credit-based pricing model is often viewed as expensive, with individual books costing around $15.
  • Unused credits can expire even for active members, leading to frustration over lost value.
  • Increasing presence of 'virtual voice' (AI) narration, which many users find inferior to human performers.
  • Reports of purchased books being removed from user libraries without prior notice.

Caveats

  • There is significant community pushback regarding Audible's royalty structures, which some users and authors claim are unfair to creators.
  • Long-term users often suggest using third-party tools to download and back up purchases to ensure permanent access.
  • The customer service experience has been described as poor by some long-term subscribers.

Best for

  • Heavy readers who want to switch between listening and reading via Kindle Whispersync.
  • Users who have access to credit card rewards that cover the subscription cost.
  • Listeners seeking a massive, centralized library of high-quality audio productions.

Avoid if

  • You prefer to support authors through platforms with more transparent or higher royalty payouts.
  • You are budget-conscious and have access to free alternatives like Libby through a local library.
  • You have a strong dislike for AI-generated narration in your audiobooks.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~306 days), which may affect the accuracy of current pricing or specific app features for this fast-changing service.

If you have the same book on the kindle app and audible, not only can you play the audio file from the kindle app but it will also highlight the text you’re reading, as it’s narrated, and turn the pages for you. Kinda great!

Outside of his writing, he has to get a lot of credit for speaking out against Amazon/Audible, doing what he can to help smaller authors, fighting for fair payment and rights.

I started DCC after lots of hesitation, and went for the audio books, because I had Audible and everyone kept saying the audiobooks is were where it’s at.

As a person who likes a.lot.of indie authors who find the self in the Amazon system, Audible is pretty much my go-to, even if it isn't the best deal.

What I also do is set a timer on Audible for 90 mins to make sure it plays while I fall asleep. I get mild insomnia sometimes. Anyway, it works!

There is also an audiobook from Audible narrated by award-winning performer Zura Johnson (who is a delight).
