AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Persona 5 Royal is a highly stylized JRPG praised for its exceptional audiovisual presentation, soundtrack, and deep social simulation. While many players find the characters and story compelling, the game is frequently criticized for its extreme length, repetitive dialogue, and inconsistent pacing. It is often described as a "chill" experience that is well-suited for handheld play, though its verbose nature and long gaps between save points can be a significant barrier for some.

Pros

  • Incredible UI and stylish visual presentation
  • Outstanding soundtrack that remains memorable long after playing
  • Engaging social simulation and unique character cast
  • Snappy, fast-paced turn-based combat that feels modern
  • Light on mandatory grinding compared to other genre entries

Cons

  • Extremely long runtime with significant amounts of filler and padding
  • Highly repetitive dialogue that often rehashes plot points multiple times
  • Pacing issues that can make the game feel like a "slog" in later sections
  • Long stretches of dialogue (up to 45 minutes) that can prevent saving
  • Tutorials that persist for dozens of hours into the experience

Caveats

  • A large portion of the game's new content (the third semester) is locked behind specific, non-intuitive social requirements that are easy to miss.
  • The game is very dialogue-heavy and leans into "anime-esque" melodrama which may not appeal to all players.

Best for

  • Players looking for a long-term, immersive world to get lost in
  • Fans of social simulators and turn-based RPGs
  • Steam Deck users looking for a high-quality handheld experience

Avoid if

  • You have limited gaming time and prefer tight, fast-paced narratives
  • You are easily frustrated by repetitive exposition and verbose dialogue
  • You dislike games that gate significant content behind specific, unexplained requirements

I thought P5R was light on grinding. It has Mementos, which does allow for grinding, but it never felt like something I had to do.

I followed it up immediately with Persona 5 Royal, then Metaphor Refantazio.

Persona 5 Royal: Just recruited Makoto. The cast is pretty great so far. Gameplay is pretty easy but snappy overall. Presentation really did take a quantum leap forward.

I loved Persona 5 Royal, but I agree with the pacing. I was fortunate enough to play this game, when I had lots of free time and wanted to immerse myself in some fictional world and it was perfect for it.

As someone who just finished Persona 5 Royal after slowly working through it all year, save your time and don’t pick it back up. I also detested the pacing and dialogue and if anything, it gets worse past the point you stopped.

I ended up abandoning Personal 5 Royal too because of the exposition dump and verbose dialogues which I found rather annoying rather than charming.

even if that's all true, it's still a non-intuitive way to lock a HUGE chunk of content away from the player. And *hinting* that the player needs to spend time with >!Maruk!i< is a pretty long way from warning them that they'll miss out on all that content if they don't. Why are you defending such archaic player hostile design?

It's absolutely absurd to hide 1/3 of the game's content behind unexplained requirements in such a long game.

Parent context: I'm curious about why you consider the ending of Persona 5 Royal to be abrupt. Did you get to play the third semester? ... I found it to be a satisfying conclusion.

P5R was a strange experience for me. I liked it quite a bit, but I would find it hard to revisit. The parts that are great are REALLY great and the parts that I hate, I REALLY hate. So it’s hard to make a final verdict.
