For Persona 5, I'd actually argue that the vanilla version is a much better experience for a first-timer than Royal. P5R adds a TON of new stuff that's really cool for someone revisiting the game and wanting *moar*, but as a first-time experience, it's so much bloat in parts of the game that didn't really need more bloat to begin with.
