I just used my 45L for a month in SE Asia, including a two day caving trek where I used the backpack. I don’t find the straps terrible, but they’re not great , either. I’m guessing decisions had to be made about how to best conceal them then used on airlines. I used the hip belt while hiking , camping and caving, and it did help a bit.

I tried to make some comparison images back then when I had the Aer. Hopefully that helps! Note that the Peak design keeps its shape where the Aer sacks quite a lot.
I've tried both and ultimately kept the Peak Design. I was able to fit a LOT more in it's normal 35L configuration. ... Also (not sure if I'm allowed to say this :p) the Peak Design was more comfortable for me than the Aer. Because it's got a metal frame and it's a bit longer, the hipbelt genuinely supported it and weight was actually on my hips instead of stomach
the PD45 gets even more hate due to being very heavy and not comfortable to carry.
I did look at the Peak Design 45L but a lot of reviewers have said it doesn't fit a lot of airlines carry-on requirements and isn't that comfortable to carry around.
