AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Paula's Choice 2% BHA is a widely recognized chemical exfoliant frequently described as a "holy grail" for clearing pores and reducing congestion. However, user sentiment is notably split between those who see significant improvements in skin texture and those who experience severe irritation or skin barrier damage. While it is effective for cleaning out pores to make them look less prominent, it requires a cautious introduction to avoid adverse reactions.

Pros

  • Highly effective at cleaning out pores and making them appear less prominent over time
  • Regarded as a long-standing "holy grail" product for managing skin congestion
  • Helps to clear breakouts by penetrating deep into the pores

Cons

  • Significant risk of destroying the skin barrier if used too frequently or on sensitive skin
  • Can cause a prolonged and painful "purge" period or inflammatory breakouts for some users
  • May show no visible results for certain users even after several months of consistent use

Caveats

  • Users strongly advise starting slowly (2-3 times per week) rather than daily use
  • Often causes irritation when used in the same routine as other strong actives like Tretinoin or Benzoyl Peroxide
  • If no improvement is seen within three months, users suggest the product may not be a good fit for your skin type

Best for

  • Individuals with congested pores or blackheads
  • Those looking for a well-established chemical exfoliant for oily or acne-prone skin

Avoid if

  • You have a currently damaged or sensitive skin barrier
  • Your routine already includes multiple high-strength actives like Tretinoin and Benzoyl Peroxide
  • You experience persistent dehydration or irritation around the mouth and nose

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence comes from Reddit mentions with a median age of 209 days, primarily from skincare-focused communities.

paula’s choice 2% bha liquid exfoliant has been a holy grail product for many of us for DECADES.

PM: cerave foamjng cleanser, the ordinary glucolic acid or paula’s choice bha (alternate days, extremely recent addition to my routine as recommended by a friend), the minimalist vit b5 moisturizer

I would also consider adding a gentle chemical exfoliant like CosRx BHA blackhead clearing power liquid or Paula's Choice BHA exfoliant (comes in gentle and full strength).

For general tx and prevention, apply something like Avene Comedomed Peeling lotion w/ Retrinal and Glycolic acid, or Paula's Choice 2% bha liquid exfoliant, or OTC adapalene lotion, De La Cruz 10% sulfur ointment, Medicube's 16% Azelaic acid serum, and on and on.

The biggest thing I'd say you're probably missing is SPF in the morning. For the spots and blocked pores around your mouth, that's super common and honestly could be from toothpaste residue, touching your face while eating, or even just the way products accumulate in that area. Before you add another product like a sebum softener, I'd try just being really deliberate about rinsing around your mouth after brushing your teeth.

I’d use it on your recovery nights instead of your retinol nights. BHA + retinol in the same routine can be irritating for a lot of people. On recovery nights you could do: cleanse → Paula’s Choice 2% BHA → moisturizer.

I would take a break from the BHA, use a gentle cleanser, and a moisturizer rich in ceramides. Maybe even a calming serum. Discontinue all actives and see if your skin improves at all.

If you’ve given it 3 months and you’re not seeing improvement, it’s time to stop, or examine how it fits into your routine. Salicylic acid can help to clear breakouts by penetrating and clearing pores. However, if your barrier is damaged, it can cause further damage that leads to inflammation which can cause breakouts.

I've tried Derm Doctor KP scrub and Panoxyl body wash, Stridex pads, Paula's choice bha. None of them have worked I've used all these for months too.
