Pros

  • Patagonia Torrentshell often goes on sale at different outdoor retailers and it’s a decent choice.
  • Torrentshell is a great and proper hardshell with high quality and durability considering the price. The pit zips for venting are exactly what you'd want. It's not the lightest and it doesn't have the fanciest features. The front pockets...
  • I've become fan of the Patagonia Torrentshell. A durable proper hardshell with large pit zips for venting. The pockets aren't suited for use with a climbing harness and the hood doesn't fit over a helmet. It's less than 1/4 of the price...
  • Can vouch for the torrentshell being light and waterproof for multiple years.
  • Torrentshell is great at keeping you dry and hardy

Cons

  • I find them to be very nice in terms of design and function. Hood adjustment is well designed, which is part of why I got it originally. However, the liner of the jacket is disintegrating. I think it's more due to age (~10 years) rather...
  • I know you can’t have all these features perfectly in one jacket, but I keep hearing recommendations like the Patagonia Torrentshell and the OR Foray II.
  • Patagonia torrentshell can fit every trip except for the pct due to the weight, 400g on M size, that depends on your budget to buy a ligther one to the pct.
  • rain jacket (torrentshell) This feels possibly overkill? For example, should I drop one of the fleeces? Or maybe replace one of them with a thin merino sweater? ... And/or either drop the raincoat or the puffy coat?

Torrentshell is a great and proper hardshell with high quality and durability considering the price. The pit zips for venting are exactly what you'd want. It's not the lightest and it doesn't have the fanciest features. The front pockets aren't waterproof and not compatible with climbing harness.

I've become fan of the Patagonia Torrentshell. A durable proper hardshell with large pit zips for venting. The pockets aren't suited for use with a climbing harness and the hood doesn't fit over a helmet. It's less than 1/4 of the price of the one you listed and will perform about just as good in almost all hiking situations.

Patagonia Torrentshell for a real durable full featured rain shell. I got an XL size in a small compression cube.

I'd get a Patagonia Torrentshell. I really don't love 2L shells. My wife just got one to replace an older shell that was falling apart and its great. They are <$200 USD currently.

I have a Patagonia torrentshell and kuhl klash pants. Wore these as my outer layers for my first 14er ascents and I was relatively comfortable hiking through heavy sleet and gales.

I find them to be very nice in terms of design and function. Hood adjustment is well designed, which is part of why I got it originally. However, the liner of the jacket is disintegrating. I think it's more due to age (~10 years) rather than the amount of usage.
