Nova Launcher
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Nova Launcher is widely regarded as a legacy powerhouse for Android customization, offering deep control over home screen layouts, gestures, and icon behavior. While many users still consider it the gold standard for its feature set and backup capabilities, the sentiment is increasingly mixed due to its acquisition by an analytics firm and reports that development has effectively ceased. Long-time fans are currently split between sticking with its superior functionality and migrating to alternatives as bugs begin to appear on newer Android versions.
Pros
- Extensive customization options for almost every aspect of the home screen
- Advanced gesture support, including swiping on icons and multi-finger gestures
- Reliable backup and restore functionality for maintaining layouts across devices
- Supports unique features like screens to the left of the home page
Cons
- Widely reported as abandonware with a significant lack of recent updates
- Acquisition by Branch (an analytics company) has caused distrust among privacy-conscious users
- Increasing reports of stability issues, such as blank app drawers and jittery performance
- Widget padding and scaling are starting to break on recent Android versions
Caveats
- The original development team was reportedly downsized or fired following the Branch buyout
- Some users report that stock launchers have caught up to Nova's basic feature set
- Bugs often require a full launcher restart to resolve
Best for
- Power users who rely on highly specific gesture-based navigation
- Users who want to keep the exact same home screen layout for years across different phones
- Customization enthusiasts who need more features than stock launchers provide
Avoid if
- You prefer apps with active development and frequent security/feature updates
- You are concerned about your data being handled by an analytics-focused parent company
- You want a modern, lightweight launcher optimized for the latest Android UI standards
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of over 400 days, which may not reflect the very latest state of the app's stability on the newest Android releases.

It's not just the lack of updates anymore, it is starting to actually break. Some of the widgets are now broken (overly padded) unless you resize them to some very specific sizes or set your home grid to very specific values with nasty padding, something that doesn't happen with the exact same widget on any other launcher, started with the recent android version. Things start to break. And devs don't give a duck.
Yes, it used to be Nova Launcher for me.
Nova Launcher is still the classic answer here, one-time purchase years ago and it's the reason my home screen actually works the way I want instead of fighting the default. gestures for everything, icon packs that actually apply cleanly, folder styles that don't look like every other Android phone
Also I tried nova launcher kinda of hard to use
Nova Launcher if you want to actually customize the home screen, way more flexible than Samsung's default
Nova (pretty bad reputation lately, likely only going further downhill)
i swipe up or down on folder icons as shortcuts to other apps and i haven't found any alternative including octopii. ... that s why nova is unique for me. drawer buttom seems old but very useful. also icon swipe up and down ARE FANTASTIC.
Nothing will ever measure up to Nova so just keep using it until it breaks. A lot of people will hate on this comment but you all know it's true.
I tried out Nova for the first time and it's pretty cool but it didn't quite work for this. So I looked into it and it turns out the thing we're talking about is set up from the framework of Motorola. So no launcher can bring this back.
I still use nova launcher (combined with sesame). So when i open my app-drawer (not the recent screen we have been talking until now) i have a searchbar and if i click on that there will be shown three tabs under the searchbar "frequent app" / "recent" and "new or updated".
