Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Nikon Z8 is highly regarded as a high-performance powerhouse that delivers flagship-level autofocus, video capabilities, and dynamic range at a more competitive price point than rivals like the Sony A1. While it is frequently described as a 'monster' for professional work such as weddings and birding, its significant physical footprint and high-resolution file sizes are the primary trade-offs.

Pros

  • Exceptional autofocus system described as 'bulletproof' and 'extremely good' for action and weddings.
  • High dynamic range that allows for significant flexibility when pushing files in post-production.
  • Strong video performance, often compared favorably against other high-end hybrid cameras.
  • Excellent value proposition for those seeking flagship features without the price tag of a Sony A1.
  • High resolution sensor suitable for detailed work like birding.

Cons

  • Substantial size and weight (910g), which some users find 'monstrous' or overly bulky.
  • High megapixel count leads to very large file sizes, necessitating more storage and SD cards.
  • Occasional compatibility issues with third-party lenses following firmware updates.

Caveats

  • Software updates have been known to temporarily break compatibility with certain third-party lenses, such as the 35-150mm.
  • The camera's size is polarizing; while some prefer the ergonomics of a larger body, others find it a significant 'downer' for portability.

Best for

  • Birding and wildlife photography (especially when paired with the 180-600mm lens).
  • Professional wedding photography where reliable autofocus is critical.
  • High-end video production.
  • Users transitioning from older Nikon systems who want top-tier mirrorless performance.

Avoid if

  • Portability and travel-friendly weight are your primary concerns.
  • You want to avoid the high storage costs associated with large, high-resolution files.
  • You rely heavily on specific third-party lenses that may face firmware-related compatibility hurdles.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of approximately 392 days, which may affect the relevance of firmware-specific lens compatibility mentions for this fast-changing hardware.

The Z8 is a monster of a video camera compared with the A7V.

The Z8 autofocus is extremely good. I have not missed a thing using mine so if the Sony A7V improves on already getting all the shots I'm not sure if that's an improvement.

Z8 is a solid pick for wedding work, that AF system is pretty bulletproof and the dynamic range gives you tons of room to push files around in post

better dynamic range in mechanical shutter (they use DGO so it's currently best dynamic range below medium format - well, at ~iso1000 z8 catches up and later they are the same)

The allure of the Nikon Z8 is the cost as well as the larger/heavier camera body.

Nikon z6III (or z8 if it's significantly better)

At current market prices the R6 Mark III is closer to the Z8. About $400 more for the Nikon in my region. And that is a way better camera

The Z8 is a great option for you if it weren't for the size.
