Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Nike is currently facing significant criticism from the Reddit community, primarily centered on a perceived decline in quality control (QC) and material durability despite steadily increasing prices. While the brand remains a staple for high-intensity sports and continues to leverage high-profile sponsorships, many long-time fans report switching to competitors due to comfort issues and a sense of 'market fatigue' from oversaturated product lines.

Pros

  • Remains a top choice for high-intensity sports and athletic performance
  • Strong brand recognition and ability to identify/sponsor top-tier athletic talent
  • Potential for high-value purchases when found at discount retailers
  • Some legacy users still report long-term durability (5+ years) for specific older models

Cons

  • Frequent reports of poor quality control, including misaligned lace holes and premature wear
  • Rising retail prices that users feel do not reflect the actual material quality
  • Narrow fit and lack of adequate sole padding in several popular models
  • Perceived oversaturation of the market with repetitive Jordan and Dunk releases
  • Ethical and political controversies affecting brand perception

Caveats

  • Sizing is frequently described as narrow; some users suggest sizing up significantly for comfort
  • Quality appears to vary drastically between different product tiers and manufacturing batches
  • Community sentiment is heavily influenced by the 'hype' cycle and dissatisfaction with marketing stunts

Best for

  • Athletes requiring specific performance footwear for sports like tennis or volleyball
  • Brand enthusiasts who prioritize aesthetics and sneaker culture over long-term value
  • Shoppers who can find products at significant markdowns

Avoid if

  • You prioritize consistent build quality and 'Buy It For Life' durability
  • You have wider feet or require plush cushioning for long-distance walking
  • You are sensitive to price-to-quality ratios at full retail MSRP

Nike are unwearable unless I size up to a 15.

Nike is a brand I’ve really noticed slipping in recent years. The price has skyrocketed over time with their products marketed as more 'premium'. Yet with the steep price increases, the quality has dropped significantly.

Nike could pay them 5x their wages and still make huge profits. It’s disgusting.

I'd take Asics or certain Nike's as well.

Everyone seems to have realised Nikes aren’t particularly comfortable at the same time. I’m lifelong Nike guy and I’ve lived in New Balance this year because the fit and finish of every Nike shoe I’ve bought recently has been terrible.
