AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Ashwagandha is a highly polarizing supplement primarily used for stress reduction and sleep improvement. While many users report it is invaluable for managing morning cortisol spikes and social anxiety, there is a significant and recurring warning regarding "emotional blunting" or anhedonia. Users frequently describe feeling like a "depressed robot" or being in an "emotional straitjacket" after prolonged use or high dosages, making it a supplement that requires careful self-monitoring.

Pros

  • Effective for managing high stress and morning cortisol spikes
  • Improves sleep quality and helps with insomnia
  • Reduces social anxiety and general anxiety symptoms
  • Aids in physical recovery from exercise and overtraining
  • Can improve nighttime Heart Rate Variability (HRV) for athletes

Cons

  • Frequent reports of emotional numbness, apathy, or anhedonia
  • Can cause a "robotic" feeling or an "emotional brick wall" sensation
  • Potential for mild stomach issues
  • Possible withdrawal effects, such as nightmares, when cycling off the supplement

Caveats

  • Effects appear highly dose-dependent; some users report benefits at 300mg but negative emotional effects at 500mg+
  • Cycling (taking regular breaks) is widely recommended to prevent emotional flatness
  • Individual tolerance varies significantly, with some users feeling negative effects in as little as two days
  • Different variants (KSM-66 vs. Sensoril) may be better suited for daytime or nighttime use respectively

Best for

  • Individuals dealing with high-stress environments or acute anxiety
  • Athletes looking to improve recovery and manage overtraining stress
  • People struggling with sleep disturbances

Avoid if

  • You already experience apathy, low motivation, or extreme indifference
  • You have previously felt "emotionally flat" when taking similar supplements like NAC
  • You are not in a high-stress state, as some users suggest it can negatively impact those with already low stress

What redditors said (10 of 75)

I'm training for an ultramarathon and have been taking it following my hard days (aka weekends) especially when I feel like I have been overtraining. It keeps me from entering flight or fight during the warmup of whatever next workout is planned and gives me a higher nighttime HRV for what it's worth.

Someone with apathy absolutely should not take ashwagandha. Extreme apathy is one of the more common side effects of it.

If you are looking for mood stability, Ashwagandha or NAC might be worth considering as alternatives.

Parent context: GABA's supplements ability to cross the blood brain barrier? it is a bad thing, for me is a waste of money, that is. On the other hand, Ashwagandha, just like L-theanine can be used both day or night, I mostly take it in the evening because I take L-theanine during the day. It's a matter of preference, I tested both supplements, both day and night and found L-theanine = day - Ashwagandha = night, … Reply: On the other hand, Ashwagandha, just like L-theanine can be used both day or night, I mostly take it in the evening because I take L-theanine during the day.

I've taken it many times on and off for over a decade now and never had one issue with it with any of the extracts that I've had. Huge help for me as I need the cortisol lowering, primarily because of my anxiety disorders.

So when I took it in the evening, it gave me a sense of profound calm and a mood boost, but it only lasted for an hour. After that, I felt worse than before taking it/low.
