Mazzer Philos
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Mazzer Philos is widely regarded as a robust, "endgame" single-dose grinder that excels in both espresso and pour-over applications. Users frequently praise its industrial build quality and the ease of switching between brew methods using its repeatable clicked settings. While the sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, some owners find the workflow slightly tedious due to the hatch design and minor retention issues.
Pros
- Exceptional build quality described as heavy-duty and built to last a lifetime
- High grind consistency for both espresso and filter coffee methods
- Repeatable clicked settings make it easy to switch between different brew styles
- Operates much more quietly than competitors like the DF64
- Compact footprint, with some users recommending a sideways orientation to save counter space
Cons
- Workflow can be tedious due to the requirement of opening and closing a hatch
- Retention issues where grounds stick to the catch cup or remain in the chute (up to 0.5g)
- Plastic components on the power switch and stand feel cheap compared to the metal body
- Adjustment dial is located on the back, which some find inconvenient
Caveats
- While retention is low, it is not zero even when using the built-in knocker
- Recent price hikes have caused some potential buyers to cross-shop it with higher-end alternatives
- One user reported the unit making 'sad noises,' though no permanent damage was confirmed
Best for
- Home baristas looking for a durable, 'endgame' single-dose grinder
- Users who frequently switch between espresso and pour-over
- Those who prioritize a quiet and stable grinding experience
Avoid if
- You want a completely seamless workflow without manual hatches
- You require absolute zero retention without needing to clean the catch cup
- You prefer front-facing adjustment controls
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 377 days, which may not reflect the most recent pricing or minor hardware revisions.

Have had the Profitec Move/Mazzer Philos combination for just over a month now - going to hit 100 shots pulled this weekend. Both are great, have no real regrets... On the grinder front, the Philos is a beast, haven't really found anything it can't do well.
I've used several different 64mm platforms in the past, including the Zerno Z1, Mazzer Philos, and DF64, and this grinder (J64V) might be one of my favorites
I can already taste the difference (not exaggerating: finally kinda understand what those flavor adjectives mean). When I get it right, it's amazing.
The Philos was a disaster imho
I got a Mazzer philos but immediately hated everything about the single dosing workflow.
Being into audio I was slightly skeptical about the benefit of an expensive grinder but it was immediately noticeable. Very happy with the purchase.
The Breville Luxe is a fine drip machine, and the Mazzer Philos is an outstanding grinder. (I own neither.) I can't imagine a better drip coffee experience. The Philos in fact is certainly overkill.
I also have a Philos. When I bought it they threw in the 189 burrs for free. I swapped them out recently and ended up swapping back - my lighter roasts I couldn’t make work with them. I also prefer it calibrated to “true zero” not the 10 click buffer a lot of vids recommend. Factory setting and stock burrs are my choice after messing around with it!!
Lurking for years and then finally pulling the trigger on a Bianca and Philos combo is such a satisfying moment. The Philos handles roast range changes really well which makes dialing in on the Bianca a lot more forgiving.
I landed on the Lelit Bianca V3 + Mazzer Philos. Started dialling in today and couldn’t be happier.
