Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

MacroDroid is widely regarded as a user-friendly and intuitive automation tool for Android, often positioned as a more accessible alternative to Tasker. While it is praised for its ease of use and ability to outperform built-in system routines, users frequently note that modern Android restrictions have made certain advanced features more difficult to implement without technical workarounds.

Pros

  • Significantly easier to learn and more intuitive than Tasker
  • More powerful and flexible than built-in tools like Samsung Routines
  • Excellent for quality-of-life automations like location-based triggers and contact-specific ringtone settings
  • Active community support and a dedicated subreddit for sharing macros

Cons

  • System-level actions like toggling WiFi, Location, or DND are increasingly restricted by Android
  • Requires a separate helper app and ADB commands for certain features to function on newer Android versions
  • Fewer total features and less depth for power users compared to Tasker
  • Logic involving variables can be less straightforward for some users

Caveats

  • Recent Android OS updates have made installing the necessary helper app more difficult, often requiring a PC and ADB
  • Some high-level system manipulations are only possible if the device is rooted

Best for

  • Users who find Tasker too complex but want more power than basic system routines
  • Automating simple quality-of-life tasks like settings toggles and notification management

Avoid if

  • You need to automate deep system settings (WiFi/Location) but are uncomfortable using ADB or rooting your device
  • You require the most advanced, feature-dense automation platform available

and first I was using Macrodroid, less confusing, but it needed a helper app separately installed to manipulate wifi and hotspot. With the android version upgrade Google was more and more restricting installation of this helper and at the end you could not install it as a simple apk but only through adb an such BS... So I dropped the Macrodroid.

MacroDroid is probably your best bet. It's way less intimidating than Tasker once you actually open it — it uses "when this happens, do this" trigger/action pairs instead of a full scripting language, and there's a template library so you're not starting from a blank canvas.

MacroDroid or Automate can both do "every N days at time X, fire an alarm", free tiers included.

Macrodroid - automation, much better than Routines on my Samsung even with Goodlock module.

Try Macrodroid. More powerful but has a slight learning curve as compared to BR. Try it.
