Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The M4 Max is widely regarded as a top-tier professional workstation chip, praised for its massive memory bandwidth (410GB/s) and exceptional performance in video and graphic workloads. While users are impressed by its ability to maintain high performance and long battery life even when unplugged, there is a strong consensus that the chip is significant overkill for casual users, students, or those performing basic office tasks.

Pros

  • Exceptional memory bandwidth (up to 410GB/s) compared to lower-tier chips
  • Surprising battery life that can sustain a full day of editing and rendering
  • High ceiling for specs, supporting up to 128GB of RAM and 8TB SSD
  • Excellent longevity and 'future-proofing,' with users expecting 5-6+ years of relevance
  • Unbeatable portability for a machine with workstation-level power

Cons

  • High entry price, with some configurations reaching $3,999
  • Diminishing returns for users who do not specifically need 40 GPU cores
  • Considered a 'bad value' by some when compared to the 20-core GPU variant of the M4 Pro

Caveats

  • Potential software compatibility issues for specific apps not yet optimized for Apple Silicon
  • Extreme overkill for basic tasks like web browsing, Slack, or university coursework
  • Mixed reports on niche benchmarks where lower-tier or older chips may occasionally outscore it in specific tests

Best for

  • Professional video editors and graphic designers
  • Users requiring maximum RAM (up to 128GB) for heavy multicore workloads
  • Digital nomads who need a mobile workstation that performs well on battery

Avoid if

  • Your primary use case is university studies or general office work
  • You are on a budget and the M4 Pro meets your performance requirements
  • You do not have a specific plan to utilize high multicore or GPU loads

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 306 days, which may impact relevance for the most current hardware comparisons.

Looks like the M4 Max destroys the M5 on bandwidth right now. 410GB/s vs 153GB/s.

I bought the $3,999 M4 Max, but that I was graduating and wanted to buy something ostentatious.

Parent context: All of those Reply: In that case, M4 max with maxed out specs would be the “best” MacBook.

Amazon consistently sells the entry level versions for a bit of a deal for a lot of Apple products (the M4 Max MacBook Pro is $400 off right now, for instance).

MacBook Pro 16″ with M4 Max — max RAM (128 GB) + max SSD (up to 8 TB) This is the most powerful MacBook laptop currently available.

On eBay right now I see a 16” m4 max for 1800. It’s easy for me to say just nut up and buy it for the extra money. But in all honesty it’s probably a more efficient move. An m4 max will likely outperform the next 5 years of apples base model laptops

MacBook Pro (14” silver M4 Max base model). So far don’t have a use case to push the M4 Max to its potential. Gonna try and keep it for 4 years.

However, lately, I’ve been trying really hard not to buy the 128GB 8TB 14” M4 Max. I can afford it, but what’s the point? I hear that voice telling me I should just get it because there’s nothing better and it will satisfy this burning desire.

Myself I’d get the M4 Max with 64 gigs of ram they’re on sale at Best Buy right now. You’d be pretty well future proofed.
