Pros

  • The larger hotspot is actually expected with the 42R - it has a bigger die size but similar lumen output, so you get more throw with a slightly wider beam patern than the SFT40.
  • Arguably, for a strict thrower, the SFT40 (or SFT-25R) is great.
  • I think SFT40 with a cleaner beam would be an endgame light for me. It's the best all round emitter imo
  • SFT40 blows it away (imho)
  • If you want throwy & warm, the 3000k SFT40 & SFT70 are by far the best options.

Cons

  • Same goes for SFT40, I've found at ≥3A R9 is 80.
  • I didn't expect the 42R to have such a large hot spot compared to SFT40. I was hoping for it to be tighter. Output looks awesome though.
  • I think your choice of using the sst40 instead of sft40 was a good example how sometimes it's a good decision even though it is the emitter everyone loves to hate

My sft40 line and nichia 519a are just pure yellow or pure white

This is a Fantastic Blend of output in lumens, and throw. This emitter is extremely tough and can handle 10a just fine. I find this emitter to be very utilitarian, it has a wide and fat beam, with good candela.
