Loop earplugs were the best for the newborn active sleep stage. Muffled the noise just enough to sleep but not enough to stay asleep if baby was upset.

i second the loop earplugs, they have a model which is adjustable so you can flip a tiny switch and ittl go from you being able to hear a conversation and block out background noise to complete noise cancellation.

I have a pair of these, I can confirm they work well for the price point - not sure if they are the quiet 2 ones though

Loop earplugs are pretty comfortable and stylish, and I use them sometimes when I'm having sensory issues (including when I sleep)

One thing that my partner has really appreciated was loop earplugs. They don’t block all noise but they do take the edge off of general kid noise to not be so overstimulated.

Also consider Loop earplugs and you can also use them alongside the headphones.

Totally understand the nails in the chalkboard feeling - try some loop earplugs or noise cancelling earbuds, they really help me.
