Pros

  • I always suggest to new JC players to play the solo mode because the overhead is relatively minor. ... it's excellent because it uses 95+% of the multiplayer rules and helps teaching multiplayer by offering avenues of negotiation.
  • The game is done very well and tastefully and is almost made to be a satire in how evil the British actually were
  • It’s got a decent solo mode.
  • This is one of the best games ever made. It’s highly underrated.
  • As I said before, it is exactly what I was looking for: a very political, interactive, highly thematic, fun board game that, most importantly… I could actually afford. ... I can guarantee that this is the best game I have ever played!

Cons

  • Parent context: I’m thought this was a heavy negotiation based game wouldn’t you lose all that with a Bot? Reply: Like the other person said, you do. It turns it into a puzzle game about managing favours with the bot.
  • It's honestly a terrible name. A nonsensical title that people won't understand. This is coming from someone who likes the game btw.
  • reaching for John Company when wanting something lighter feels crazy to me.
  • Anything with politics or negotiation is just not as fun online IMO. John Company, Sidereal Confluence, Oath, Dune etc. Half the fun is talking shit with your friends.

Don’t use the solo rules for this - they’re excellent but they add another layer of complexity that you don’t need for the normal multiplayer game.

I've found that the game isn't too hard to introduce to people if you really have the rules down pat and kind of act like a DM a little bit. It's definitely in a weird spot. My group that likes thinky heavy economic puzzles kind of bounced off because it has a bit of randomness and massive player interaction, whereas my dudes on a map type group took a ton of convincing just because of how it looks haha. It's not for everyone, but for a "heavy" game, it doesn't take itself too seriously.
