AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
iRacing is widely considered the premier platform for competitive online sim racing, valued for its robust matchmaking and professional environment. While it excels at providing structured, skill-based competition and realistic practice for real-world tracks, it is frequently criticized for its high cost and a subscription model that restricts access to purchased content if the membership lapses.
Pros
- Highly effective skill-based matchmaking that groups drivers of similar abilities
- Opportunities to race on the same servers as professional drivers
- Excellent performance in VR, specifically noted on Meta Quest 3
- Valuable tool for practicing real-world tracks and honing driving skills
- Strong support for high-end hardware like triple monitors and direct drive bases
Cons
- Expensive pricing structure requiring both a subscription and individual car/track purchases
- Purchased content becomes inaccessible if the monthly subscription is not maintained
- Inflexible racing schedules that may not allow users to race specific cars or tracks at will
- Occasional 'brutal' matchmaking splits where skill gaps between drivers can be significant
Caveats
- Enforces a strict cockpit-only view for all races
- Performance and frame rates can vary significantly depending on the specific track being run
- The high cost is sometimes viewed as a barrier that filters out less serious or disruptive players
Best for
- Serious sim racers seeking structured, competitive wheel-to-wheel racing
- Drivers looking for a professional-grade practice tool for real-world circuits
- Users with high-end VR or triple-monitor setups
Avoid if
- You prefer a 'buy once, play forever' ownership model
- You want a casual, accessible racing experience without a scheduled commitment
- You are on a tight budget and want to avoid recurring fees

Don't get me wrong, iR is still the best platform for online racing. Though I think it's more time/money eifficent for me to hone my skills in LMU.
I guess I’ll need to extend my iracing plan now
That's one thing iRacing does best. Bringing the big players to the same servers as us mere mortals.
I had this happen in a GT3 race at Suzuka on iRacing last night. Passed a guy going into Spoon on the last lap, he tried to Senna me at the chicane.
iRacing doesn't let you race out of cockpit view anyway.
iRacing isn't that expensive + the "expensive" price keeps kids from getting in
Parent context: It still includes the game and plenty of tracks/cars at a huge discount. What’d you expect, all content they ever made? Reply: It still includes the game and plenty of tracks/cars at a huge discount. What’d you expect, all content they ever made?
iRacing needs a gun update, get with the times already
Few years ago I got fully into iracing. The nerves in some of those were like flashbacks of when I used to compete as a runner in school haha. Does feel a bit ridiculous but yeah, goes to show how good sims are now.
Depends a bit on which sim - iRacing i have never had it try to kill me
