Pros

  • if you like mottainai you should love innovation. buy just the base game and play at least 20 times before getting any expansions. probably one of the highest bang for its buck games I have ever bought
  • Innovation. Not quite roleplay, but it does feel like building a civilization. It is small so it’s a good starting place.
  • I enjoy it, gotta embrace the swingy-ness. Lol.
  • I’ve mostly played 2 player with my wife BUT it hits our table more than any other game because it is amazing.
  • Finally, someone admitting that Innovation is the best Civilization board game.

Cons

  • Innovation is a very unique and interesting game, but it is civilization-themed more than a civ game. There’s no map, no fighting, or building.
  • Parent context: Innovation. Not quite roleplay, but it does feel like building a civilization. It is small so it’s a good starting place. Then if you like it, we can recommend heavier games Reply: Tbh, this is kind of a crazy take, espec...
  • I do think the non-Iello version are much more clearer in iconography and readability, but if I would never get the game to the table with my game group with those versions.
  • Parent context: I’ve tried it a few times at it feels very “take that”-ish. Like completely destroy what I’m trying to do type of take that. But it seems like for most that’s a feature not a bug? Or maybe I just haven’t played enough to...

Parent context: Innovation. Not quite roleplay, but it does feel like building a civilization. It is small so it’s a good starting place. Then if you like it, we can recommend heavier games Reply: Tbh, this is kind of a crazy take, especially in the context of Civ. The civilization building in Innovation is highly abstracted and removes a lot of the dimensions associated with the genre.

Parent context: I’ve tried it a few times at it feels very “take that”-ish. Like completely destroy what I’m trying to do type of take that. But it seems like for most that’s a feature not a bug? Or maybe I just haven’t played enough to know how to rebound? Reply: It's a directly confrontational, highly interactive game. And nothing (except achievements) is really permanent, but also, it's possible to turn around bad situations very quickly if you can find the pathway to do it.
