Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • Not cheap, but not too expensive either. Think 2K max? Like a FGN or Ibanez.
  • I guess japanese Ibanez are always an option too.
  • Ibanez usually play quite well and the steel string neck is more manageable for most.
  • I have a limited edition Ibanez that I would like to put on the wall, however I’m not sure if it’s best in the case.
  • Squier (avoid Mini models), Epiphone, Yamaha, Ibanez (avoid Mikro models) and Jackson (avoid Minion models) are all great brands for starter electric guitars.

Cons

  • I've never really liked the quality control or build quality of the lower end Ibanezes (hell even my 1200€ Ibanez FR800 has QC issues).
  • they make 3/4 scale strats and Ibanez guitars as well so same concept with your short scale bass.
  • The ibanez especially are a great value for the price (but bizarrely miss the mark on some ergonomics they could have straight copied from Strandberg)

Ibanez and Schecter are great bang for your buck in that range.

You can find a $400 Ibanez that plays better than a $1500 Fender.

And the Ibanez was the most pleasant to play for me and sobbed as good as any of the others.

Ibanez makes good cheap semi-hollows, as well.
