Ibanez and Schecter are great bang for your buck in that range.
You can find a $400 Ibanez that plays better than a $1500 Fender.
And the Ibanez was the most pleasant to play for me and sobbed as good as any of the others.
Ibanez makes good cheap semi-hollows, as well.
Over the years I found myself to be a huge Ibanez fan. I love them.
