Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Hyaluronic acid is widely regarded as a staple for skin hydration and plumping, frequently recommended for improving texture and achieving a "glass skin" appearance. While highly effective when applied to damp skin and sealed with a moisturizer, some users find dedicated serums redundant because the ingredient is already prevalent in many cleansers and creams. It is generally praised for being gentle and layering well with other actives like niacinamide and retinoids.

Pros

  • Effective for plumping the skin and improving overall texture
  • Generally non-sticky and does not pill when layered with other products
  • Pairs well with red light therapy and other active ingredients
  • Available in highly affordable formulations from brands like The Ordinary
  • Less likely to clog pores compared to heavier hydrating agents

Cons

  • Often redundant as a standalone serum since it is a common ingredient in many moisturizers
  • Some users report seeing no visible progress or improvement in hydration levels

Caveats

  • Must be applied to damp skin (actually wet, not just towel-dried) to prevent it from drawing moisture out of the skin
  • Should always be followed by an occlusive moisturizer to lock in the hydration
  • Layering order matters; it is typically applied after thinner serums but before heavier creams

Best for

  • Individuals with dry or dehydrated skin looking for a plumping effect
  • Users aiming for a 'glass skin' routine
  • People seeking a gentle hydrating layer that won't aggravate acne

Avoid if

  • Your current routine already includes multiple products containing hyaluronic acid
  • You prefer a minimalist routine and already use a high-quality moisturizer

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 193 days, though the ingredient's use case remains stable in the community.

Hyaluronic acid is in nearly everything and there’s very little reason to get a dedicated HA serum IMO. But unless you are sensitive to it, using it morning and night is not an issue.

Once your skin heals, maybe worth spot testing using it with hyaluronic acid (if that's something that's already in your routine and non-irritating).

Also if you want glass skin make sure you hydrate your body well. (drink enough water and use products like a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid- no need for a hyaluronic a. serum as many other products already contain it)

for red light therapy ive been using a blockbluelight panel for about 6 months and its been great for skin texture and post workout recovery for serums i stick with hyaluronic acid since it doesnt pill or get sticky and the hydration pairs really well with the red light sessions

Sadly’s no magic wand skincare wise that I know of, you can plump the skin a bit with stuff like hyaluronic acid and maybe that would help too.

You could add in Hyaluronic Acid before your moisturizer at night and in the morning. I like The Ordinarys because it's cheap.
