Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Guns of Fury is a run-and-gun Metroidvania that blends Metal Slug-style action with exploration and a massive weapon arsenal. While the core combat and pixel art are highly praised for being fun and nostalgic, the game's Metroidvania elements—specifically the map system and navigation—are frequently criticized as dated or primitive.

Pros

  • Satisfying Metal Slug-style run-and-gun combat
  • Gorgeous pixel art and high-quality music
  • Large and enjoyable arsenal of weapons
  • Fun, straightforward action that captures a retro arcade feel

Cons

  • Primitive map system with poor markers and navigation
  • Instant enemy respawns can make backtracking feel tedious
  • Bosses are visually impressive but often considered too easy
  • Environments can look identical, making it easy to get lost

Caveats

  • The game is more linear than typical Metroidvanias, with bosses numbered in order
  • 100% completion is described as punishing and requires repetitive map sweeps
  • Fast travel points and map-making are noted as areas needing improvement

Best for

  • Fans of Metal Slug or classic run-and-gun arcade games
  • Players looking for 'unapologetic action' over complex exploration
  • Retro gaming enthusiasts who appreciate high-quality pixel art

Avoid if

  • You prioritize deep, non-linear exploration and sequence breaking
  • You are easily frustrated by dated map systems or repetitive backtracking
  • You want a high level of challenge from boss encounters

Granted, the map is quite primitive and most of the bosses, while visually impressive, ended up being relatively easy, but the excitement I felt while decimating legions of enemies with the help of a massive weapon arsenal took me back to the summer of 1996

Guns of Fury, which takes the run and gun action of Metal Slug and infuses it with metroidvania exploration, resulting in an explosive mix of constant skirmishes and a steady discovery of secrets.

I also played Guns of Fury a second time, but some of the design decisions felt more annoying this time. Most notably the fact that enemies respawn instantly when you enter an area. ... Combat is fun, so it’s not a dealbreaker, but if you’re lost and just want to find out where to go, it can get a bit tedious.

Playing Guns of Fury. Am about 5 bosses in. Game is a lot more linear than I would have liked it to be. Doesn't seem to have any way to sequence break, so much so that bosses are actually numbered by the order you fight them in. ... Over all, it seems ok so far. Fun despite its flaws

I started it a couple hours ago. I'm about 3 bosses in. It's definitely entertaining. I do get lost often and backtracking is hard cause every area looks identical.

Yeah, the map seems to be the most common complaint. It is too dated for a metroidvania in 2025, especially one that is trying to attract metal slug fans.

Some of them you have to be wearing special equipment for and bump into other special items. It’s just very puzzling to find everything requires going over the entire map 5-10 times, post game, and even then some stuff is almost pure luck.

All joking aside, I quite enjoyed this game and would play dlc or sequel in a heartbeat. I do hope they improve their map making, map markers, & fast travels points though. I would still give this game a solid A- though.

Getting a 100% in Guns of Fury is absolutely ridiculous lol. I recommend just beating the game unless you like punishment 😆
