AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Four Roses is a highly regarded bourbon brand frequently praised for its Single Barrel and Small Batch offerings, which enthusiasts often cite as top-tier 'everyday' whiskeys that punch above their price point. Under Master Distiller Brent Elliott, the brand is recognized for its consistent blending and high-quality Barrel Proof expressions. However, the flavor profile is somewhat polarizing; while many love the spice-forward nature of their high-rye mash bills, some drinkers find them too dry or lacking the heavy oak balance they prefer.

Pros

  • Single Barrel and Small Batch bottles are considered excellent values for 'everyday' drinking
  • Barrel Proof expressions are highly sought after and generally viewed as safe, high-quality purchases
  • Strong reputation for blending and distillation consistency under current leadership
  • Offers unique access to various sub-recipes and high-age statements in barrel picks

Cons

  • Spice-forward profile can feel unbalanced to those who prefer heavy oak
  • Price increases on private barrel picks (now often $90+) have made them harder for some to justify
  • Flavor profile can be polarizing, with some users finding certain bottles 'just okay' or even off-putting

Caveats

  • The bourbon can lean toward a dry, Kentucky-style rye profile which may not suit all palates
  • Individual barrel picks can vary significantly, with rare reports of unusual tasting notes like toothpaste in specific batches

Best for

  • Bourbon drinkers looking for high-value, consistent mid-shelf staples
  • Fans of spice-forward, high-rye bourbon profiles
  • Collectors of barrel-proof single barrel expressions

Avoid if

  • You prefer a heavily oaked, sweet profile over a spicy or dry one
  • You are strictly budget-conscious regarding recent price hikes on premium barrel picks

I'm a sucker for Four Roses, but I've yet to be let down with these bottles. EH Taylor Barrel Proof is around $300 when I find it, and it's not even close as far as I'm concerned for that kinda money.

I’ve not been a lover of four roses at all. Tried a couple different blends and just didn’t care for it. I’ve obviously not tried it all but I’ve not ever bought anymore after being disappointed on the two I bought some time ago

Now full disclosure have not been a Four Roses guy so far, I find their base offerings to be a bit spice forward without the level of oak I like to balance it out.

the score isn't higher than, say, an above-average batch of Barrell Bourbon or bottle of EHT Barrel Proof or even many of the most popular single barrel options out there (Four Roses, Russell's Reserve and Old Forester).

Hold off on buying that next bottle of Barrell, Russell's Reserve, Four Roses or whatever else you have in your hand that's $90 and pick this up instead

Those bourbons can sometimes smell and taste like Kentucky-style ryes and present a little on the dry side.
