Denon AVR-X1700H
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Denon AVR-X1700H is widely regarded by the home theater community as a premier entry-level to mid-range receiver, frequently recommended for its balance of features and price. Users often highlight it as a significant upgrade over basic soundbars or entry-level Sony receivers, noting its capability for 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos configurations. While it is a previous-generation model, it remains highly relevant due to its compatibility with the Audyssey app and community-developed calibration scripts like A1 Evo, which users claim significantly enhance audio performance.
Pros
- Excellent value proposition, especially when purchased refurbished or through wholesale clubs like Costco.
- Supports 5.1.2 Atmos or 7.1 surround sound setups with sufficient power for most starter systems.
- Compatible with the Audyssey MultEQ Editor app and A1 Evo optimization scripts for advanced room correction.
- Often cited as nearly identical in performance to the newer X1800H but available at a lower price point.
- Provides a noticeable improvement in audio clarity and depth compared to entry-level AVRs.
Cons
- Reports of firmware bugs that can cause the web control interface to crash when accessing specific menus like speaker settings.
- Limited expansion potential compared to higher-tier models; lacks the processing for 5.1.4 or 9-channel setups.
- Minimal pre-outs, limiting options for those who want to use external power amplifiers.
Caveats
- As a previous-generation model, availability may shift toward refurbished units rather than new stock.
- Firmware updates have been known to introduce stability issues with the web-based management tools.
Best for
- First-time home theater builders looking for a reliable 7-channel receiver.
- Users planning a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup on a budget.
- Value-conscious buyers who are comfortable using refurbished hardware to save money.
Avoid if
- You require more than 7 channels of amplification for larger Atmos configurations (e.g., 5.1.4).
- You need a full set of pre-outs for a high-end external amplification setup.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 296 days, so confidence is lower regarding current firmware stability and retail pricing for this hardware.

Glad you upgraded the receiver. I had a sony str dh770 and recently changed to a denon x1700h. It made a much bigger difference than I expected.
I bought the X1700H recently, there didn’t seem like much difference besides a new UI and maybe 2 pre-outs.
The AVR-X1700H is the previous gen that's still just fine and I've seen those sub-$400
Some of the bundles that picked my interest are the Definitive Technology ProCinema 6D speakers paired with either Denon S570BT or X1700H.
To accommodate sound, I purchased a Denon avr-x1700h with intention of doing a 5.1.2 atmos setup.
I bought 2 used (and checked out) mythos STS floor speakers, equally distanced and plugged into a Denon X1700H.
I would recommend getting a Denon X1700H or X1800H, the $20 Audyssey phone app, and spending a bit of time learning how to use A1 Evo AcoustiX
I see the Denon x1700h is on sale, it has the same specs so feature wise I wouldn't benefit but from a audio quality perspective, would it be better?
The latest firmware update at this time introduced a weird behavior. When I try to open web control, it works. But if I want to check on Speakers menu item, it crashes the whole web control (can't access it at all) for 30 seconds over browser or the app.
I’m connecting a Martin Logan Motif X + 2 ElectroMotion ESL speakers, so 3 electrostatic speakers, as a 3.0 system to a Denon X1700H.
