Dell XPS
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Dell XPS is a polarizing premium laptop series that draws praise for its high-end displays and build quality while facing significant criticism for thermal management and hardware reliability. Users frequently highlight its excellent OLED and 120Hz IPS screens and its strong compatibility with Linux. However, sentiment is weighed down by reports of thermal throttling, rapid battery degradation, and controversial design choices such as the capacitive function row and the removal of the headphone jack.
Pros
- Premium build quality with a lightweight, metal-frame design.
- Top-tier display options including high-brightness 120Hz IPS and OLED panels.
- Strong Linux compatibility and support, including official Ubuntu versions.
- Upgradable M.2 storage in most models.
- Excellent portability for a high-performance machine.
Cons
- Thermal issues including frequent throttling and loud or rattling fans under load.
- Inconsistent battery life with reports of rapid health degradation after 6-12 months.
- Polarizing input changes, specifically the loss of physical function keys and a haptic trackpad that requires an adjustment period.
- Persistent 'sleep mode' bugs that can lead to battery drain and overheating while the lid is closed.
- Removal of the dedicated headphone jack on newer models.
Caveats
- Thermal performance may require manual intervention, such as repasting, to avoid hitting 100C during heavy tasks.
- Long-term reliability is often compared unfavorably to Dell's Latitude business line.
- The modern aesthetic is divisive, with some users feeling it has lost its premium identity compared to older generations.
Best for
- Users seeking a premium Windows ultraportable with an industry-leading display.
- Linux enthusiasts looking for a high-end laptop with reliable driver support.
- Students who can access significant discounts on the 13-inch models.
Avoid if
- You require physical function keys or a built-in headphone jack.
- You perform sustained heavy workloads that are sensitive to thermal throttling.
- You prioritize long-term hardware reliability and battery longevity over aesthetics.

My expensive work XPS constantly throttled until I repasted and cut out large swaths out of the halfassed thermal tape, and I profiled it for weeks before and after, threw everything up in grafana to compare, and even did a number of controlled heavy compile jobs (ladybird/firefox iirc) at higher temporal resolution. Been a while, but I saw about a 20C drop in idle temps and no more insane jumps up to 100C when kicking off any software builds.
Most of Dells XPSs or Precisions(5000 series of you want an alternative for the T480) normally got decent Linux support.
I had an older XPS for 6 years and loved it, but it felt like this one had glass bones and paper skin.
I have been an XPS user for many many years (since the first XPS 13). I had to abandon the platform because they kept dinking with the keyboard. I need pgUp/pgDn keys.... and real function keys (both non existent on the current XPS).
if you want a high end product, dell xps
I've been using XPS since it was invented. Never had a problem except with the thermal paste. Since I started using liquid metal they have been running cool.
Bit of an older XPS, But never got more than 2 hours out of it, Lucky to get an hour
If you don't wanna go used the new dell xps for students is pretty cheap
Dell xps series has a ubuntu version (which i have and i hate the new keyboard).
We use XPS because we want a reliable and strong machine to help us do our work, after 9 years using XPS (4 different machines ) I have realized that XPS gives you good experience for the first 6 month and then it starts degrading after that
