De'Longhi Dedica
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The De'Longhi Dedica is a popular entry-level espresso machine frequently recommended for its small footprint, reliability, and low price point. While it is capable of making quality coffee, Reddit users generally agree that it performs best with dark roasts and often requires modifications—such as switching to unpressurized baskets and bottomless portafilters—to reach its full potential. It is often viewed as a 'gateway' machine that users eventually outgrow as they seek better temperature stability and more control.
Pros
- Compact design with a very small counter footprint
- High reliability and durability, with some users reporting over 10 years of use
- Fast startup and minimal wait times compared to some prosumer machines
- Excellent value for beginners, especially when purchased used or on sale
- Capable of producing great espresso when paired with a high-quality grinder and unpressurized baskets
Cons
- Inconsistent water temperature, often requiring 'temperature surfing' or empty cycles to heat up
- Poor extraction performance with light and medium roasts due to temperature limitations
- Inconvenient for high-volume use or making multiple milk-based drinks in a row
- Stock pressurized baskets are limiting for those seeking true espresso quality
- Build quality can feel 'toy-like' compared to more expensive semi-automatic machines
Caveats
- Achieving high-quality results typically requires additional investment in a non-pressurized basket and a capable espresso-focused grinder
- Uses a 51mm portafilter size, which has fewer third-party accessory options than the industry-standard 58mm
- Users frequently mention the Breville/Sage Bambino as a superior alternative in a similar price bracket
Best for
- Beginners looking for a budget-friendly entry into home espresso
- Users with very limited kitchen counter space
- Drinkers who prefer dark roasts and milk-based drinks like lattes
Avoid if
- You primarily enjoy light or medium roast specialty coffee
- You want a professional-grade experience without needing to 'mod' or upgrade parts
- You need to make several drinks quickly for guests

lol, I used delonghi dedica for years, when I upgraded to rancilio Silvia, it felt like a downgrade due to wait times then I moved to the dual boiler.
I don't have good memories of my dedica, once I went unpressurized, I think the water temperature (despite settings and running an empty cycle first) was not enough for a good extraction with medium roasts. It was good for a dark roast, though.
The Bambino is apparently better than my old Dedica, but I used to have to temperature surf and it had major issues with lighter roasts.
The Dedica is really a powerhouse for its price.
I seriously started out with a used Delonghi Dedica for under 100 € and Q2 handgrinder for 100 € too. In combo with a good basket and a bottomless portafilter it made great coffee.
Congratulations on your first setup, the Dedica is a little powerhouse!
I started with a Dedica + Sage Smartgrinder and ended up with a La Marzocco linea micra 😃
The dedica is a nice little machine.
it's strange that the brevilles broke, I have a 200€ DeLonghi Dedica working after nearly 10 years
My espresso machine is a Delonghi Dedica, so I think pretty comparable to yours, and I found that if I made longer shots (I was doing 18g in and going for about 45g or so out) I had far better results than if I stuck with the aim of 2:1.
