Pros
- Cosmic Encounter might work for your group also. It’s fairly light and VERY interactive.
- Cosmic Encounter and Dune are classics that have stood the test of time
- it competes in the same space of weight/length/social interaction as Cosmic Encounter and Lords of Vegas, which are 2 of my favourite games, so was a barrier in getting both those games to the table if we had to rotate the 3 of them - so...
- Got into the hobby around 2011 with Pandemic and Cosmic Encounter. Sold off my small collection when I moved cross country in 2013. Only game I kept was Cosmic.
- It’s interesting that Tom who gave it a very glowing review in that Dice Tower video as opposed to Zee compared it to Cosmic Encounter a lot which I think is right.
Cons
- There are trading and negotiation games, like Bohnanza and Cosmic Encounter... but you can't upgrade buildings, or expand your network/area in those.
- makes me unmotivated to try other games that rely on diplomacy-style negotiation, from Cosmic Encounter to TI4.
- then we got into Catan, Cascadia, Century, PARKS, Carcassone, Dead of Winter, Cosmic Encounter, HEAT, etc.
- Not sure this completely fits the bill but Cosmic Encounter is probably this game for me. I'd heard about it from SUSD's glowing reviews and I loved the ideas behind the design, but my board game group at the time was very non-confrontat...

it competes in the same space of weight/length/social interaction as Cosmic Encounter and Lords of Vegas, which are 2 of my favourite games, so was a barrier in getting both those games to the table if we had to rotate the 3 of them - so I sold it a few years ago and even though it’s a very good game, I haven’t regretted it since because we just play Cosmic and LoV instead, which I think are even better games.

Cosmic Encounter is another fantastic six-player game.

So. Much. Fun. Each alien twists the base game in wildly different directions. ... For Knizia fans with an interest in "fiddling with the knobs" of a game's design and who want a highly interactive experience, I can't recommend this game enough. It has shot up into my top 10 games of all time and I can't get enough of it.
In Cosmic Encounter when the attacker has rallied virtually everyone against you, someone offers to ally with you in the defence and you reply "No, this is a guaranteed win for me, so I don't need any help" and you see the attacker's confidence crack. I absolutely love those moments when your power and/or your cards are lined up for a beautifully decisive play and you know you will shortly be dropping the hammer.
