There is zero evidence to say how it works (method of action), has not been studied to determine if it's humane, and based on what we see with every other animal, it's probably not. I will never use it although I do trust that biologists care and don't believe they see suffering which has always been reported with fish.

It never actually met many requirements or had evidence it did what pet owners would expect but for home euthanasia it got put on approved lists and it was an accessible option. Current studies are all saying it needs to be pulled from schedules. It cannot be used for snails and sadly people recommend it left and right for them too.

Eugenol does not suppress the CNS. It causes hypoxia (not the sedation you're looking for), immobilizes fish while they still feel pain, and doesn't result in brain death- in fact, seizures occur. That's not peaceful and that's unacceptable

Do not use clove oil. There is actual science and research that has been done with eugenol and fish. It will kill crayfish, yes, eugenol can be dosed to kill many things. It's not appropriate for many animals it's used on- it's cheap, it's accessible and hobbyists spread a ton of misinformation about it.

Eugenol does not depress the CNS so fish are immobilized yet, backed by at least two studies, still feel pain and show seizure activity/convulsions. It is NOT considered humane and the recommendation is for this method to be pulled from any AVMA schedules as it doesn't meet the standards for being ethical or humane.

Parent context: not sure if you can feed them to the beast which is called Reginald after, but clove oil is a good choice! It produces an anesthetic affect and makes them a bit drowsy before putting them to sleep which gives them a painful, less traumatising death. Reply: Just checked, clove oil also euthanizes Crayfish unfortunately. So I would rather not risk feeding them to him if I go that route, but thank you for that info!
