Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Cicaplast is widely regarded as a staple for skin barrier repair and soothing irritation, often described as a "legendary" product for compromised skin. While it is a go-to for many dealing with redness or dryness from actives like tretinoin, user experiences are notably polarized when applied to highly sensitized skin. While many find it healing, a significant minority of users report that it can burn, itch, or cause reactions when the skin barrier is already severely damaged.

Pros

  • Highly effective for repairing and protecting a damaged skin barrier.
  • Soothes redness and inflammation for most users.
  • Versatile usage as a spot treatment, a sealing layer, or mixed with other moisturizers.
  • Commonly used to mitigate dryness and irritation caused by retinoids.

Cons

  • Can cause a burning or itching sensation on extremely irritated or allergic skin.
  • Heavy, greasy texture that some users find unpleasant.
  • Prone to pilling when layered under sunscreen or other products.
  • Can feel surprisingly drying for some skin types despite its thick consistency.

Caveats

  • Individual reactions vary significantly; it may exacerbate irritation for some while healing it for others.
  • Some users report it only provides temporary relief for redness without long-term curative effects.
  • The heavy formula may be too thick for comfortable wear under makeup.

Best for

  • Skin barrier recovery.
  • Soothing irritation from harsh actives like Tretinoin or Aklief.
  • Spot treating dry, flaky, or inflamed patches.

Avoid if

  • You have a known sensitivity to dimethicone-based protectants.
  • You experience burning sensations upon application to irritated skin.
  • You require a lightweight moisturizer that layers well under makeup.

Skin looks extremely irritated. Maybe dial it back and start using cicaplast?

Cicaplast is literally recommended to chemo patients dealing with skin side effects. Obviously it can be used by healthy people, but it is for severe dry skin or irritation. It isn't meant to be regularly used by young people with acne

I’ve always used the LRP cicaplast and never had problem with it before but now it burns when I put it on.

What works for some may not work for others but La Roche Posay Cicaplast has been my go to when I've experienced this.

I plan on using aloe vera and La Roche Posay Cicaplast and aquaphor and stopping other skincare until it’s healed.

Things I missed (most are trip specific): ... Heavy duty moisturizer like cicaplast. The altitude dried out my skin.

ETA: The cicaplast can be drying for some people

Cicaplast is a great healing balm, however it does contain a lot of shea butter (5th ingredient on list). For a lot of people who are acne-prone, that can trigger pimples and clogged pores.
