Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

ChatGPT is viewed as a powerful but double-edged tool. While users find it excellent for explaining complex concepts, generating simple scripts (like ffmpeg), and summarizing data, it is frequently criticized for its tendency to 'hallucinate' facts and code. Many users warn that its 'eager to please' nature leads it to confidently present incorrect information or validate flawed premises, making it a tool that requires constant human verification.

Pros

  • Effective at explaining complex technical concepts in an accessible way.
  • Strong performance with simple, well-defined tasks like ffmpeg commands or structuring lists.
  • Useful for long-term memory of user preferences and workflow styles.
  • Can help identify potential failure modes in a task before execution when prompted correctly.

Cons

  • Frequent hallucinations, particularly with coding cmdlets and technical modules.
  • Writing style is often described as recognizable, formulaic, and difficult to make 'human.'
  • Tendency to validate flawed user premises rather than correcting them.
  • Reported inclusion of paid advertisements disguised as organic recommendations.
  • Struggles with accuracy in image recognition and real-time pricing data.

Caveats

  • Project-specific information in the chat context can quickly become outdated.
  • The 'chatbot' interface may lead users to rely on it for human-level reasoning it cannot actually perform.
  • Vision Pro users have reported stability issues with the native app, requiring Safari workarounds.
  • Vision-based prompting often latches onto the wrong details in screenshots or images.

Best for

  • Conceptual learning and troubleshooting explanations.
  • Summarizing long talking points into structured formats.
  • Generating boilerplate code or simple automation scripts.
  • Iterative prompt engineering for repetitive tasks.

Avoid if

  • You require 100% factual accuracy without the time to cross-reference.
  • You need current market pricing for travel or used goods.
  • You are looking for high-quality, undetectable creative writing.
  • You are a student or professional who needs to develop deep, foundational knowledge of a subject.

That video description sounds AI generated too. It reads like every other chatgpt caption and has the same structure as all the chatgpt captions selling some course or solution or creator expertise.

I'm more interested in how you used chatgpt, why you used it and why you couldn't format the post at all.

the default form of AI being "chatbot" with the release of chatgpt fucked everything, i think. it could have been something else. the goal is not almost always "pretend to be human" which is exactly "replace humans"

My job is slowly becoming: fixing AI-genned code by managers who think chatgpt allows them to "do it themselves"

Parent context: I still write scripts because every time I tried to use ChatGPT to generate scripts, it has hallucinated cmdlets. Reply: I wanted chat gpt to help me write a script to map network drives using powershell, it created something that looked legit enough that i wasted time looking for the module it made up.

That could all be accurate and maybe you did verify it but I need to point out that at this point, chat gpt and other LLMs ('AI's' so called lol)-- these things 'hallucinate' and 'lie'. They're known to make plausible shit up.

My hardware knowledge is pretty much that many years out of date, so I'm starting by asking Claude. Based on my experience and requirements, along with minor input from ChatGPT & Gemini, it settled on these builds for 2 possible budgets.

The weird thing is that I put it into Chatgpt and it did recommend going Barcelona to London to Prague. I then asked it if that was backtracking and it said yes.

I don't have the background knowledge to know if chapGPT is pointing me in the right direction or the wrong one (something for which it is known for).

You’ll get more thoughtful travel tips from a well-crafted ChatGPT prompt at this point.
