Pros

  • I feel like chainmail is a long game. Over time it gets the finish nice and smooth. It kinda forces you to use elbow grease while limiting unwanted damage to the "good" seasoning
  • The difference is that chainmail is easier to clean and is not as disposable like many people treat steel wool. To me steel wool gets nasty quick- where my chainmail has the versatility of the wool but I can clean it with a bristle brush.
  • I find it very useful to remove gunk after cooking than say a metal spatula. Very useful and keeps my pans clean.
  • Have it. Love it.
  • I mainly use it to get those last bits of carbon off, or to get through very stuck on food, but rarely use it over the whole surface.

Cons

  • My experience is exactly the same as yours. Underwhelming product, a scouring pad and some steel wool for the harder to remove bit is all I need.
  • I bought this chainmail online to clean up some used pans I obtained. ... It barely does anything. Good old steel wool performs way better with half the elbow grease.
  • Complete waste of money. Most of the stuff comes off with a plastic scraper. If it doesn't, boiling some water in the pan and scraping with a metal spatula was easier and way more efficient than anything I ever did with the chainmail.

I just heat the pan back up, hit it with some water, and wipe it off with the chainmail. Not much elbow grease all.

It also does a beautiful job on the stainless steel racks for my smoker. It's harder than the resin but softer than the finish on the racks, so no dulling the finish or creating scratches that make debris harder to remove.
