Canon EOS Rebel T7
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Canon EOS Rebel T7 is generally viewed by the Reddit community as an outdated entry-level DSLR that suffers from poor value in the modern market. While it is recognized as a functional tool for beginners to learn the fundamentals of manual photography (exposure, aperture, and shutter speed), it is frequently criticized for using 'bottom of the barrel' components and lacking features found in similarly priced used or mirrorless alternatives.
Pros
- Effective and affordable entry point for learning manual photography controls
- Lightweight and portable camera body
- Capable of producing good images in bright, outdoor conditions
- Simple interface suitable for hobbyists and students
Cons
- Uses outdated technology, including the Digic 4 processor and a basic 9-point autofocus system
- Poor low-light performance, often requiring a tripod for usable indoor shots
- Video quality is described as very poor or 'garbage'
- Lacks modern hardware features like an articulating (flip) screen
- No official support for a battery grip
- Poor retail value compared to newer mirrorless cameras or used prosumer DSLRs
Caveats
- Strongly advised to avoid the common bundle that includes the 75-300mm lens, which is widely panned for poor quality
- The EF mount is part of a discontinued DSLR line, which may limit long-term lens ecosystem growth compared to the newer RF mount
- Some users argue that modern smartphones may provide better automated results for casual users
Best for
- Absolute beginners on a strict budget who want a physical camera to learn manual settings
- Casual daytime hobbyist photography such as car shows or landscapes
- Buyers who can find the body at a significant discount (under $250)
Avoid if
- You intend to shoot any significant amount of video
- You frequently shoot in low-light environments without a tripod
- You have the budget for a used Canon 60D/70D or a modern mirrorless R-series camera
- You are considering buying it at full retail price
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 379 days, which may affect relevance for this fast-changing hardware category.

This is a nice kit - you’ve got a camera, 2 lenses and a bag And it’s new. And good. And the price is nice. You can do a very good job taking very nice pictures with it
This price is a great deal for those just trying to get started into photography, and the rebel series is a perfect way to learn the basics. You don't need premium glass to learn basics, and if you do break something, better it's only a $300 kit versus a $1000+ kit.
Whether you think the T7 is good or not, $289 is a steal for a new entry level camera with two lenses and a bag. I bought this same kit and it cost me $700. Someone just getting into photography would be pleased with this.
Parent context: What's wrong with the T7 that you don't recommend it at this price point ? Reply: A T7 is essentially on par with a T4i, which is a 2012 entry level DSLR. But in some ways the t4i is superior.
Parent context: What's wrong with the T7 that you don't recommend it at this price point ? Reply: It's stripped of a lot of basic features just because it's an entry level camera. I'd rather get a used 5diii or something
The T7 is not worth it. Get a R100 minimum
i have a canon rebel t7
The camera i'm using is a rebel t7 btw(i know, its really not that great)
I bought my first camera. I got a Canon Rebel T7 with a Canon 75-300mm lens. So far, this setup has been just fine for bird photography, which is my main focus. However, I really want to start saving up for a new lens!
Right now I’m using a Canon Rebel T7 and it’s been good so far but I feel like maybe it could be better with a different lens or camera.
