AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II is regarded as a solid, prosumer-level full-frame DSLR that remains a capable tool for photography, particularly for those transitioning from entry-level crop-sensor cameras. While it is praised for its articulating touchscreen, Dual Pixel AF in live view, and overall value on the used market, it faces criticism for its centrally-clustered autofocus points and mediocre dynamic range compared to higher-end or newer mirrorless alternatives.

Pros

  • Articulating flip-out touchscreen and built-in GPS
  • Dual Pixel AF (DPAF) provides excellent performance during live view and video
  • Significant upgrade in features and handling for users moving from entry-level DSLRs like the T3i
  • Strong value proposition as a used full-frame body for EF lens owners

Cons

  • Autofocus points are tightly clustered in the center of the viewfinder
  • Single SD card slot lacks the redundancy found in pro-tier bodies
  • Mediocre dynamic range and high ISO noise performance according to some users
  • Viewfinder autofocus is considered less reliable than the live view system

Caveats

  • Sensor performance is frequently described as being nearly identical to the original 6D
  • Many users are currently transitioning from this model to Canon's mirrorless R-series (e.g., R6, R8)
  • Image quality is a point of contention, with some users finding it poor for a full-frame sensor while others find it more than sufficient

Best for

  • Budget-conscious photographers wanting to move to a full-frame sensor
  • Existing EF lens owners who prefer the DSLR form factor
  • General photography and enthusiasts who don't need professional-grade redundancy

Avoid if

  • You require dual card slots for critical professional work
  • You need wide autofocus coverage across the entire frame
  • You prioritize the latest mirrorless eye-tracking and video features

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of 412 days, reflecting the camera's status as a mature product in a market shifting toward mirrorless systems.

And I don’t know anyone who would take an EOS R over a 6D mark ii.

So I shot on 6d mark ii, and recently i got the 5d mark iii for dirt cheap for ML to be like a video camera, and I actually prefer photos on it over the 6d2 because the noise wasn't as bad.

If you want to keep the budget low, I would look at used prosumer or pro model DSLRs like the 5D mark III and mark IV or the 6D mark II. These are all excellent cameras with solid performance

up until recently I was still using a 6D mark ii and that's more than enough for 90% of stuff

Lots of people will say the 6Dii has mediocre dynamic range but the jump from your camera to either of those will feel like going from a Volkswagen bug (nothing wrong with them) to either a bmw or a Mercedes

If you want something used, a 6D Mark II or a 5D Mark III on a Canon side gets you something relatively modern and will outperform recent phone cameras handily.
