Pros

  • I really want to wait for reviews about the 17-40 before praising it too much, but it looks like a slam dunk kind of lens.
  • There are some good value zooms that are pro level eg. 17-40 for wide, 24-105 v1 for mid range and 70-200 f/4's for longer range but that is the future.
  • I just bought the 17-40 last week; already used it for two events.
  • The 17-40 is a huge thing. Suddenly the camera stays home.
  • I have the 17-40. Simply put, its incredible.

Cons

  • The 17-40 is one of Canon's worst L lenses. I had one for many years (first L lens I ever bought) and it was ok for the price.
  • Something to note, it requires a filter to be weather sealed.
  • I can't speak to the quality of the 17-40, besides second hand reports (not an amazing lens).

I really enjoyed the 17-40. It was my first L lens. It definitely doesn’t have the image quality of the other L glass, but it had unique character and can render some beautiful images.

17-35 f2.8 L is under 400 or 17-40 16-35.
