Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • There are several, and the later ones are kinda decent for kit lenses. And for learning on they're fine...
  • replace with a newer model of the 18-55 with better AF

Cons

  • The 18-55 is limiting if you like to shoot anything at a reasonable distance (kids playing, wildlife, sports).
  • The 18-55 is okay. Nothing great.
  • The camera tech is a bit dated and the 18-55 is one of the cheapest and most common kit lenses in history.
  • the only one I have is the 18-55 that already came with the Canon 4000D
  • The 18-55 and 55-250 are fine starter lenses, but the quality of the glass is basically on par with the glass in your Tammy.

The 18-55 is an ok lens. Used that version for a bit but ended up ditching it for a 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM which I can't recommend enough! ... I've heard good things about the 17-55, and the 18-55 is definitely my weakest lens.

There are many alternatives to the 18-55 which are substantially better. It’s an entry level lens.
