AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Cabtreo is a triple-combination topical gel (benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin phosphate, and adapalene) that users describe as highly effective but physically intense. While many report significant clearing of moderate to cystic acne within weeks, the treatment is frequently associated with a severe adjustment period characterized by intense burning, peeling, and skin barrier irritation.

Pros

  • Highly effective for clearing cystic acne on the chin and jawline.
  • Can produce visible results quickly, with some users seeing improvements in as little as one week.
  • Simplifies routines by combining three active ingredients into a single application.
  • Leads to improved skin texture and a 'glow' once the initial purging and irritation phase subsides.

Cons

  • Frequent reports of intense burning sensations, described by some as feeling like 'fire ants.'
  • Causes significant dryness, redness, and skin flaking.
  • Can 'wreck' the skin barrier if used too frequently at the start.
  • May cause a 'purge' where acne worsens or new types of breakouts appear before clearing.
  • Bleaches towels and sheets due to the benzoyl peroxide content.
  • Increases skin sensitivity to sunlight.

Caveats

  • Many users find 'sandwiching' (applying moisturizer before and after the gel) necessary to make the treatment tolerable.
  • Starting with daily use often leads to excessive irritation; users suggest starting 1–2 times per week and slowly increasing frequency.
  • Some users reported the medication's effectiveness seemed to taper off after 3–4 months of clear skin.
  • Can cause localized swelling and intense itching for those with very sensitive skin.

Best for

  • Individuals with moderate to severe cystic acne.
  • Users looking for a multi-action treatment to replace multiple separate topicals.

Avoid if

  • You have an already compromised or extremely sensitive skin barrier.
  • You are unable to commit to a strict moisturizing and sun protection routine.
  • You cannot tolerate a potentially painful or unsightly purging and peeling phase.

Yeah the purge can definitely get worse before it gets better especially with tretinoin based stuff like cabtreo. Those deep cysts are probably all the junk that was building up underneath finally making its way to the surface

Trust me, you'll still get the benefits, I'm at the point where purging is done and it's working on the leftover dark spots...my skin GLOWS.

No idea why she told you not to moisturize after, sandwiching it is the only way it's tolerable at first for many people. I've been on it for months and still get irritation if I try to use it daily. I'd stop until your skin calms down then start slow & sandwich it. Once it starts working it REALLY works.

I went to my dermatologist, he gave me CABTREO, it’s Benzoyl + Clindamycin phosphate + adapalene. It helped immensely! It was gone totally in 3 days.

i tried it her way and my skin barrier was WRECKED. my skin was peeling off and raw underneath, and my skin felt like it was literally on fire and being eaten by fire ants when i put literally anything at all on my face, water, cleanser, moisturizer, aloe, everything, to where i had to wash everything off after applying it. i had to stop using it, didn't use cleanser or moisturizer for a day, and then invested in the la roche posay cicaplast balm and have been slathering that on my skin ever since.

i have been following her instructions, and my face is literally burning off. it feels like my skin is on fire and being eaten by fire ants. it's even WORSE after applying anything at all to my face, whether it's the Cabtreo itself, cleanser, moisturizer, even aloe vera to try to HELP the burning.

i know dryness, flaking, burning, etc can happen with this product but it's really burning to where it's too much for me to handle. i can't even apply moisturizer to try and soothe my skin because it makes it burn like fire.

I would pause the cabtreo tbh. At least for a couple days.

Clindamycin does make your skin more sensitive to sun.
