Blood on the Clocktower
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Blood on the Clocktower is widely regarded as a premier social deduction game that evolves the 'Werewolf' or 'Mafia' formula into a deeper, more complex experience. While highly praised for its exceptional replayability and 'event-like' feel, it carries a significant learning curve and mental load that can be overwhelming for newcomers.
Pros
- Exceptional replayability, with some players reporting over 150 sessions without losing interest.
- Elevates the social deduction genre by blending factual logic with social reads.
- Creates a 'huge event' atmosphere that feels distinct from standard party games.
- Works well with mixed experience levels if the group and Storyteller are welcoming.
Cons
- High mental load; the complex network of role interactions can feel 'impenetrable' to new players.
- Advanced and custom scripts are difficult to follow even for those with dozens of plays.
- Requires a large group (typically 8+ players) to function effectively.
Caveats
- The experience is highly dependent on the group; sessions with friends are often cited as superior to public meet-ups with strangers.
- New players are strongly advised to play the 'Trouble Brewing' script many times before moving to advanced scripts.
- Requires a capable 'Storyteller' (moderator) to facilitate the game.
Best for
- Large gaming groups (8+ people).
- Fans of 'heavy' social deduction games like Avalon or Resistance looking for more depth.
- Players who enjoy a mix of logic-based deduction and social manipulation.
Avoid if
- You are uncomfortable with lying or social deception.
- You prefer low-complexity party games with minimal rules overhead.
- You do not have access to a consistent group of players.

As someone who has played Blood on the Clocktower dozens of times, I can tell you that I still struggle to follow things along in the more "advanced" base scripts, let alone in custom scripts. You should ABSOLUTELY play the first script (Trouble Brewing) many times before trying the other base scripts.
Blood on the Clocktower is pretty damn heavy with the right group and the right script.
Oh, and Blood on the Clocktower is completely different from any other Werewolf/Mafia-style game you've ever played.
A game like Blood on the Clocktower is a master class in this mixture of fact and social read.
Blood on the Clocktower. 150+ plays. I haven't got bored of it yet. There's been times when I've been more and less enthusiastic about it, but despite playing last night, I can't wait for my next game right now.
Besides Twilight Imperium 4, examples include Blood on the Clocktower and Diplomacy.
7. Blood on the Clocktower - the only game in this list I don't own but every time I get to play it it feels like a huge event and I enjoy it enormously. I'm a longtime mafia/werewolf player and this feels made for sickos like me.
Blood on the Clocktower actually works great with different levels of experience, but it requires the ST and the veterans to be welcoming and accommodating to the new people.
The 5-10 games of playing and learning with my actual friends was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. After a whine I wanted my BOTC fix so I started going along to "meet ups" with a mix of super experienced dorks and clueless randos, and that was actively un-fun I would say.
I've had a few chances to play this game, and while I understand the hype, I'm finding it nearly impenetrable as a new player. The network of roles and the ways they interact with one another is very complicated - I like to think of myself as someone who is pretty competent at learning new games, but the mental load of BotC feels very high.
