AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The BenQ GV50 is a portable 1080p projector that balances lifestyle features with gaming utility, specifically noted for its USB-C docking capabilities for devices like the Nintendo Switch. While users appreciate its color quality and integrated stand design, it is frequently criticized for its low 500 ANSI lumen brightness and a higher price point compared to some competitors. Opinions are mixed regarding its reliability, with several reports of technical glitches.

Pros

  • Integrated USB-C docking supports video and power for Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck
  • Sophisticated stand design allows for easier ceiling projection and reduced keystone reliance
  • Low input lag makes it viable for gaming when visual enhancements are disabled
  • Built-in 18W speaker system is generally loud enough for bedroom or small room use
  • Stronger warranty and customer service reputation compared to some budget brands

Cons

  • Low brightness (500 ANSI lumens) makes it unsuitable for rooms with ambient light
  • Reports of hardware issues including focus errors on startup and unstable WiFi
  • Limited to 1080p resolution at a price point some users find excessive
  • Larger and heavier than some competing ultra-portable models

Caveats

  • Effective screen size is realistically limited to 100 inches due to brightness constraints
  • Gaming mode requires disabling auto-keystone and other image processing to achieve lowest lag
  • Does not include a carrying case, unlike some previous models in the GV series

Best for

  • Bedroom setups where lights can be fully controlled
  • Portable gaming with a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck
  • Users who prefer a well-supported brand with a reliable warranty

Avoid if

  • You intend to use the projector in a bright living room
  • You are looking for 4K resolution
  • You prioritize the highest brightness-to-price ratio over portability and design

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~566 days), and because hardware and software in the projector market change quickly, confidence is medium.

With Black Friday the BenQ gv50 is 600 euros in Europe. I have it, and the value for money seems excellent to me.

I have been eyeing the BenQ GV series, seems only the (newest?) GV50 is available here, and only at 1,050-1,100 SGD currently.

BenQ GV50 focus error on startup. ... Manage to setup the device and tried manual focus and still bad image. Begining to think maybe main lens is the problem.

I wish I waited for the GV50. ... GV50 has a sophisticated stand (reduces keystone), and support for USB-C C including docking for Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck.

Gv30 and 31 are definitely cheaper than the 50, and also support USB-C power and video, although output power is lower (intended for phones). ... My GV30 is a decent size and weight, and I understand the newer models are slightly bigger (and no longer include the carry case 😿). Mine also has a lower resolution compared to the newer models, and unfortunately my older model is not Netflix certified

I don't see many major upgrades from XGIMI Flip, but the price is almost double, and the dimensions and weight of it compared to XGIMI is really off-putting to me.

The GV30 speaker quality didn't disappoint me, although the speaker-only mode doesn't seem to broadcast pairing mode anymore.
