Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Apple Vision Pro is widely praised for its industry-leading hardware and immersive media capabilities, particularly for 3D cinema and as a virtual monitor for Mac users. While it is often described as a transformative 'future of computing' experience, it faces significant criticism regarding its weight, the lack of a robust app ecosystem compared to competitors, and the absence of dedicated gaming controllers.

Pros

  • Exceptional immersive media experience for 3D movies and IMAX-style content
  • Effective mobile virtual monitor solution for MacBook Pro users
  • High-fidelity spatial video and photo capture for personal memories
  • Superior display depth and realism that surpasses entry-level VR headsets
  • Strong performance for immersive travel content and virtual environments

Cons

  • Noticeable weight and bulk make it less comfortable than working without a headset
  • Lacking app ecosystem and gaming library compared to more established platforms
  • Lack of first-party controllers severely limits gaming utility
  • Frustrating automatic dimming behavior in low-light environments
  • Physical design makes it difficult to eat or drink while in use

Caveats

  • Virtual screen sharpness may not match high-end physical monitors like the 5K Studio Display
  • Streaming content availability can be inconsistent, with some users noting the removal of titles from platforms like Disney+
  • Second-hand pricing remains high (often $1,800+) despite being a more palatable entry point for some

Best for

  • Cinephiles wanting a portable, high-quality theater experience
  • Mac users needing a large, private virtual workspace while traveling
  • Early adopters interested in spatial photography and immersive storytelling

Avoid if

  • Your primary interest is VR gaming with dedicated controllers
  • You are highly sensitive to neck strain or headset weight
  • You require a mature and diverse third-party app library

At the moment, the AVP is a workable mobile virtual monitor solution.

Took it on vacation to an area near my Fuji. Took amazing Videos and spatial photos for the photo book.

I got mine second hand for $2000 (512GB) and I still think it was quite a bit too much. I didn’t think it would matter, but the games situation is a severe limitation, lack of first party controllers is part of that I think.

When I’m buying the top line models I expect a bit more polish.

Unfortunately the app ecosystem is so lacking that a Vision Pro, despite its amazing hardware, is still a lacking value proposition most of the time in comparison to [Quest 3].

The headset's heavy as always, although I've taken the past few weeks off, in the past year on weekdays I've worn it 3+ hours per day on average probably. I don't really think it will increase productivity in its current state but being locked in without the other distractions of your room can really help!

I just got a callback from Apple and I'll have to pay $299 for my hairline crack repair which was originally quoted as $0. The repair depot found a scratch that the tech at the store didn't even see, so I get to pay for a fix for a warranty problem.

The virtual screen in the Vision is definitely nice looking, and I can legitimately see it a little bit better... However, the weight and comfort of the headset is noticeably less comfortable than not having any headset. The ability to drink beverages or snack while working is greatly impacted while wearing the Vision Pro.

The display is always great, but the pass-through video suffers a little because it has to come in via cameras (it gets some graininess and a tiny bit of latency). ... The sound is also pretty good with the built-in audio, but even better if you wear some proper headphones with it. Only issue is, as always: comfort.

The fonts aren’t even as sharp as my 5K Studio Display
